A Universe from Nothing?

If so the next question is why would there be consciousness instead of no consciousness?

It's not a duality, but The Absolute; The Unified Field; The Source; The Ground of all Being; Brahman. There cannot not be consciousness. It is the fundamental Reality.

Quantum Physics tells us that this 'material' world is possibility and potential, a virtual reality.
How so? I mean, just because the Copenhagen interpretation says that an observer is needed to collapse a wave function does not mean that this is a virtual reality. I know of nothing in quantum physics which indicates that this is a virtual reality.

This is just new-age dogma, the same stuff you have been preaching here for years. Continually repeating it doesn't make it any more convincing.

Fluctuations in the Quantum and Higgs Fields create all of the mass of the atom. This mass is virtual in nature.

(note: this was written prior to the confirmation of the Higgs-Boson)

And why could there not not be consciousness?

Because we have The Universe, and The Universe is not just an absolute; it is The Absolute, as there is no relative 'other' to which it can be compared. The Universe is Consciousness, playing itself as The Universe.

And why do we have the universe instead of no universe? I am just trying to find a reason why this "consciousness" should exist in the first place.

One view is:

The anthropic principle (from Greek anthropos, meaning "human") is the philosophical consideration that observations of the Universe must be compatible with the conscious and sapient life that observes it.

The other, is that the basic raison d'etre is the cosmic game of Hide and Seek. You need consciousness for that.

I don't think that just because the universe came from vacuum fluctuations that it implies that mass is 'virtual'. It might be unstable, yes, but so are all excited states.

It's sort of like the refresh rate on your computer monitor. The image is re-created many times per second to provide the illusion of it being there. As I understand it, the virtual mass thus created via Quantum/Higgs fluctuations occur in the millions of times per second, creating the illusion of real matter.

Can you provide some links explaining that in more detail?

I already did several posts back. The physicists who see it this way, such as Goswami, Hagelin, Penrose, Capra, and others are in the minority and not taken seriously by the physics establishment. Just wanted to preface my answer. But if you did not watch the video I posted, here it is again for you.

The sub-atomic world is very weird, but so what? At our human scale things ARE real, because behaviour is described by Newtonian mechanics rather than quantum mechanics. So if I drop a brick on my foot it will hurt, and my settee doesn't disappear back into the quantum foam when I happen not be be looking at it.
