All Bathrooms Gender Neutral: Good Idea or Bad Idea?

Thing is...I know women who do not feel comfortable being alone with strange men on a bus or in the subway. Do you people that these women will feel comfortable and secure with using the same restrooms as men? You people are forgetting the sort of culture we live in.

I think having only gender neutral bathrooms is a stupid idea.
"Let's stop separating the genders because people should be able to handle it without becoming predatory."
"Let's dissolve our army and weapons because people should be peaceful."

Wisdom is not living in a fantasy world. It's dealing with reality as it is while teaching people to change for the better.

And make going to the restroom unsafe for women. How nice of them.

Do you actually have any evidence that men are very likely to or do attack women when they're in the same public bathroom? What are the figures, the research, the study on that?

Now, I know that trans women sometimes get messed with in the men's room (I had a trans woman friend who was verbally hassled for looking feminine even before she started estrogen therapy), but they also get messed with in women's rooms. For example: Beating of Chrissy Lee Polis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia She was beaten into a seizure for trying to use the women's room, by women. Not by men. I find that it's usually women who are most likely to react with panic or violence when a person viewed as male or masculine comes into a women's room/space. I've heard this, not only about trans women, but butch cis women also get harassment in the ladies room.

Yes you are. And you're to report back to us. Curious males want to know.

I've used both the men's room and the ladies room over the course of my life. I'm in a position, even now, that I could get away with using both - and I do, depending on my mood at the time and whether the locks on the stalls in the men's room work.

Just because you think it is a stupid idea doesn't make it one.

Obviously you don't have proof to back up your claim, or you wouldn't be making such ridiculous accusations.

Some people can't let go of antiquated ideas, unfortunately.

And that sucks, in fact that is evil. I hate that those things happen. But be understanding, I refuse to rob Peter to pay Paul. I am concerned with women and their safety, that will also be one of my primary concerns. I wish we lived in a perfect world but we don't. We live in this reality. And in this reality I refuse to compromise the safety of women in order to make others comfortable. I know that position sucks but it is a position I have to take because we don't live in an ideal world, we live in this one.

I hope you'll try understand my position.

No, I don't understand your position when I know of more situations where women have been violent or simply freaked out when someone that doesn't seem like a woman or feminine "enough" comes into a women's room/space. But you want to talk about men as if we're so violent? Why don't you address female violence and harassment of others? In fact, your promotion of the stereotype that males are predators feeds this violent reaction that women have towards men/masculine-appearing persons in those situations.

I've heard of many women who have used the men's room, such as in bars and nightclubs when the women's room is too full, and haven't had any problems from the males in there. But if a man went into the women's room, I'm positive he would have a problem from the panicked females in there.

Unlike you, I'm concerned about the safety of everyone, not just cis women.

At the same token, just because some think it's a good idea, doesn't make it one, as well. I can foresee some major troubles with it; which may or may not be founded.

I came across this article on FB talking about gender specific bathrooms. The author argues that this creates dilemmas for individuals who don't conform to gender norms and is a form of discrimination. It does talk about some places implementing unisex bathrooms in addition to gender specific bathrooms. But the main part I found interesting was where the author seems to advocate for making all bathrooms gender neutral:
Toilet Trouble: When Bathroom Architecture And Identity Politics Collide | Co.Design | business + design
What does everyone here think about this idea? Would this be a good idea, or is it out of touch with reality? For example, would the majority of people even be willing to use such a bathroom (especially women)? Or is this just a idealistic fantasy that has no hope of ever being functional in today's society?

i would not use a bathroom where men can come in as they please.

I wouldn't support making all bathrooms unisex, for the same reason I would support allowing a third unisex option: different peoples' different comforts.

My favorite nudist resort has only unisex bathrooms and there are no major problems with it. But then, again, we're talking nudists. Nudists tend not to have major problems with most things along those same lines. :D

I don't see it being a problem most of the time, but you never know. I, personally, don't feel comfortable with a member of the opposite sex using the same restroom. I doubt I'd feel unsafe, though. As for safety (in general), there are both male and female psychopaths out there.

Just because I don't have proof of what? That there are men that prey on women? That countries will fight wars?

Maybe in the country you live in, there is no abuse and everyone lives in peace. But in the rest of the world, these things unfortunately happen.

Making it easier for these things to happen is not called optimism. It's called negligence.

If they were individual "rooms" and not stalls, it would be fine. I already have problems with public bathrooms, if there was any gender in it on top of that, I don't think I could ever use them.

It's more of a personal issue rather than being against the idea. I like privacy, a lot.

I'd be happy if they just reinvent the toilet.
