Are you equipped with a weapon?

A gun i wouldnt own for self defense. I have a taser but it's at a friends house cuz group homes don't allow weapons.

The thing about guns is if you have to use one for self defense you already ****ed. I was taught anytime you pull a gun out to defend yourself there a possibility of killing them. Never aim one unless you prepare for that to be a risk even if you aiming to only maim. Say you do. Now youll spend years of your life and your money defending that decision to draw a weapon. You'll likely end up in prison and even if you don't all that time and money will take a toll. Then youll likely need therapy and have trauma from taking a life.

It's not worth it to me. I'd rather use a nonlethal weapon.. Im kinda hesitant with a taser due to fearing that if I were to have to use one someone i attack may have a heart problem and it could kill them. But there's less chance of killing that way and it's most the time nonlethal

That's how I feel about firearms for self defense. Plus, there's a limit to how useful they are. If someone is threatening you with a gun and you reach for yours, that's going to immediately prompt them to shoot.

I have the 357 and 50 cals

I pretty much only use them at the firing range.
They are far to heavy to carry comfortably and firing the 50 costs $3 trigger pull and kicks like a freight train.
I have 12 gauges that do not kick nearly as much.
I once had a 44mag that was fun to shoot.
It was a Dan Wesson target pistol.
Ammo wasn't too spendy.
I sold it.

Illegal drugs are even easier to deal with and more profitable. Home invaders go for the low-hanging fruit.

And for homeowners. Since it's rare for home invaders to encounter armed home occupants, the home invaders tend not to be armed themselves. Less risk for everyone.

It's touching to see how much faith you put into home intruders.

What's the average price for a handgun?

For a good 9mm? A Glock might cost around $550 or $600, but a Ruger would be somewhat less; about $400. If you buy it used, then you could knock off maybe $100 from those prices.

What you said about time in prison only applies if you are charged with a crime. If a big guy you don't know with a gun breaks a window and enters your home and threatens your family, and you shoot him, what do you think that the police are going to see you as? A criminal that needs to go to jail? Doubtful. They'll see you as someone who just defended yourself and your family from being victimized by the thug laying on the floor.

I love hearing Americans talk about their bang bangs

Gun ownership is very alien to me

It is a most peculiar custom
I am of the same persuasion as you.
I recognize the purpose of legislation that allows for ownership, but am completely terrified of US gun culture.
In Canada it's not so widespread but there are definitely people who see the gun as a symbol of freedom to the point of worship. Posing for photos with guns, making guns their whole identity.

There's a guy in my local community that told me he is a single-issue voter for 'the second amendment'. I didn't want to start a fight with him by pointing out that the second amendment does not exist in Canada. He also had a confederate flag frame for his license plates, classy guy.

What's your philosophy and tips when it comes to self defense?
First rule of self-defence will always be to run if possible.
In my view if you're too close to run, you're also probably too close to go fishing in your purse for your sidearm.

If so, you have the wrong kind of purse.

Was going to say I don’t own a weapon, then remembered I have two cavalry swords. They’d be the last thing I’d think of reaching for if anyone broke in the flat. Besides, I don’t own a horse, and a cavalry sword would probably be too unwieldy to use on foot.

Are you Americans always having to fight off armed home invaders btw? Must be exhausting…

It's not a matter of faith. It's a matter of gun control.

Even someone who's breaking into homes to steal stuff to sell for drug money knows better than to walk down the street carrying a long gun, and handguns are:

1. Hard to get legitimately, because they're restricted weapons,
2. Hard to get by stealing because: a) there aren't many of them and b) the secure storage requirements for restricted weapons are pretty strict.
3. Expensive to get on the black market (because of #1 and #2).

... so the people who have enough ready cash that they can buy an illicit gun that might be useful in a home invasion are generally not the people so hard up for cash that they'd resort to home invasions.

The exhausting part is having to put on all that armor to protect yourself...
