Protect it from being stolen, hurt, killed or destroyed or broken. Anything that causes that property to lose its function would then not serve the owners purpose.

The point is, in a general sense if you wer a slave owner, then you want your slave to serve his function, so, youd make sure that function is protected. Common sense.

So for you to say the Owners that beat or killed there slaves would be stupid, when that was the brutality of everyday life of a slave.
