Avatar Discussion (Spoilers Ahead)

I enjoyed the way the 3D was more subdued in Avatar, it wasn't used as a gag throwing stuff off the screen at the audience, but more subtly adding to the visual experience...

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Honestly, I forgot the thing was 3D til I had to go to go to the bathroom (darn coffee!) and we had to sit in the front rows as we had 8 ppl and were late. At least we were in the center. Definitely a movie I will buy when it comes out on DVD but do you think it will be in 3D? (with the glasses or at least a cardboard version)

I liked Avatar a lot but it had th same plot as FernGully ( an Australian animated movie ) back in the early 90's. The 3-D was great. I think this is the start of a whole new way of making films.

Except Ferngully was a POS. ^_^

There was some similarity to Battle for Terra, which we saw on DVD just before Avatar.

I really hope both get sequels.

Avatar is getting 2 sequels, and they hope to have the first one out by 2011. They may not deal with Pandora, but with some of the others moons of Polyphemus. Personally, I hope we see Earth in 1 of the sequels.

I hear a lot of people complaining about the story and most people seem to think that that is the weakest part of this movie and I can understand where you are coming from. It is a very basic plot-line that has been done to death in the past
I have to agree and disagree... all plots have been done to death. Avatar did not even try to distinguish itself plotwise.

I think the reason avatar is so different is because the characters are so good.
Disagree entirely with this... the characters are all stock.

First thing I said when I walked out of the theater was, I'm buying that when it comes out ;)

They are making 3D ready T.V. sets so I assume they'll release a 3D version...

It will be interesting... Cameron has said the sequels will revolve around the two main characters from Avatar...

I will say this: if James Cameron does go through with the sequels, and he stays true to his own style, they will FAR surpass this first one.

After all, Aliens was FAR better than Alien, and I consider Terminator 2 to be the greatest action movie ever made.

If Alien and Terminator, great as they were when they first came out, were so far surpassed by their respective sequels, I think we can expect true greatness from an Avatar 2.

Depends Upon My Mood..
Sure, but that was part of the script/plot. And he never really broke from being a corporate *********.

Really? When?

I agree..the drill sergeant seemed to me to be a mean butt hole.I didnt like him..He was an evil seed.

So were the characters of A New Hope and Indiana Jones.

Stock =/= bad, if done well, and I think it was done VERY well.
People can portray stock characters well, and it was done at least fairly well in the movie in question...

I think a story, word or video, would do poorly though if it were a character driven affair and all of the characters were stock... because even great stock characters aren't particularly high of quality, given their nature as being stock...

I didn't mind the stock characters, given the other breakthrough features, but...

Unobtainium ???

Source? I can't help but think that's a fanboy-wetdream.

OK - here is Cameron's actual quote in response to a question about the other moons. This quote is the source of the sequel rumors:

"Yea, we have some story ideas for how to branch out into other moons of the Polyphemus and the Alpha Centauri A solar system. But we gotta make some money with this movie first before we think about the sequel!"

I hope there will be sequels, but this is hardly conclusive. Time will tell.

Cameron made clear that the next film won't be a prequel, recounting previous backstory, but will begin after the events of the initial movie. "We'll follow Jake and Neytiri," he confirmed. In fact, Cameron intends to follow the couple for another two films. "I have a trilogy-scaled arc of story right now, but I haven't really put any serious work into writing a script," he said

That's the problem: it wasn't done very well. Star Wars characters were pretty stock, and I guess IJ were, too. But they actually were done very well, meaning the actors did a great job with them. I didn't think any of the performances in Avatar were particularly engaging.
