Bill Maher Says A Bad Word

Callisto

Hellenismos, BTW
Except George Carlin, perhaps:

We live in an era where people are forever whinging about something, for no other reason than they live to be butthurt. Not only are they ignoring context but that he didn’t simply say “the n-word” he used an actual two-word term for a specific type of slave. One that’s found in the dictionary (see here, here, and here). It identifies a slave in a specific function (indoor) OR can be used as a pejorative. Taken in context, Maher used it in the former (i.e., fake-balking at the idea of working in the fields).

Also, I'll point out that blacks use it as a pejorative toward other blacks (implying an Uncle Tom, a sell-out) whereas “field (negro)” is seen as a compliment (one who remains true, defiant to what they are).

On a lighter note, the kerfuffle reminded me of one of my favorite scenes from a Madea movie:

I think he should be fired.

But because he's unfunny and a bit dry.
That's just me though.
He'll ignore this and brush it off, in the same manner Donald Trump did with all of his campaign nastiness. HBO has already indicated that other than a lightly condemnatory statement, nothing will happen to Maher's show, other than having that one word bleeped in subsequent rebroadcasts.

Maher's a liberal darling, so you'll see plenty of people looking to defend him, deflect how the word was used, or claim that it will set up a "dialogue". There were celebrities and lawyers stepping up to defend a talentless hack like Kathy Griffin, so of course someone with a bit of clout like Maher will get support.

A white guy shouldn't be using the "n" word, especially in a comedic vein.

From my perspective, intention should matter. I trust that the African American viewer is more qualified than I to judge the level of offense, given the context for which his statement was made.

I think that the network should address anything in violation of his contract and listen to their African American viewers.

There may be some contexts where it might be acceptable, as George Carlin mentioned. It's all about intent and content of the person uttering the term.

I recall many years ago when a (white) DC city official used a word which means "stingy" or "miserly," which unfortunately sounds a lot like the "n-word." He was eventually forced to resign due to such an outcry, although there were some blacks who said that the response was a gross overreaction.

Bill Maher is tame compared to The Boondocks.
But you know....black privilege.

Gonna agree.

I don't like double standards.

If it's bad word than it's a bad word for everyone.

Should he be fired? Well, is he really a racist? I don't think so. He is like what others mentioned: arrogant, unlikable, but he's no racist.

Who cares. Marilyn Manson has used it in songs, too ( Irresponsible Hate Anthem and Rock 'N' Roll ******, which is a Patti Smith song). Such a whiny culture. Oh, and I'm half-black so I grant you white people authority to use since I don't care. But a fully black person might revoke it since they appearantly are higher in the social victimhood stakes than I. So be forewarned.

Maybe it has a little bit to do with the origin of the word?
Maybe?
...?

Whatever happened to equality then? If all people are created equal, then why do they get an exception?

One of the people I blame for this is Darwin. He promoted this discrimination with his dumb evolutionary ideas of survival of the fittest.

ONLY if they're white, or non-African American.

Why should it? It's the Blacks who first deemed it offensive, NOT the liberal media. So it's their call as to when and how it's offensive. If Blacks didn't care about the word the liberal media wouldn't have either. Thing is, whereas the conservative media doesn't give a dry fart about the sensitivities of minorities, the liberal media does, which is why we see it siding with their feelings and deferring to them. Good grief man, get a grip on yourself.

.

A Hispanic said the n-word in public and was fired.

Good grief. See my post #36.

Do you realize non-Liberals are defending him?
But you know....black privilege.
Even Boondocks stirred some Controversy, and it isn't so much a "black privilege," and a good number of black people, such as Bill Cosby and Spike Lee, might die of a heart attack and/or stroke if exposed to the show.
But I suspect white Liberals probably make up the bulk of those who find the show offensive, as well as those thinking it's "ok as along is they are the ones saying it."

I'm not sure if it's so much of a double standard as it is whiny liberals thinking they have to be offended for people and insist of fighting their fights for them and telling them what to be offended over. The "word in question" doesn't quite fully fit that description, but most black people I know would have more important things going on and it would be a very trivial concern, if one at all.
I grant you white people authority to use since I don't care.
WOOHOO! I don't say it much anyways, but I'm white and I have permission to say it! BOOYA!!

I also think that The Boondocks's brilliance & impossibility of even existing without such racism
insulates it. For Maher it was optional & pedestrian. (No offense intended to walkers.)

It wouldn't, especially since it's often enough a part of the show and it's comedy.

IMO, even that is giving too much credit to Maher by using the term "pedestrian." He tends to go for such cheap and easy shock that the proverbial chicken crossing the road is more pedestrian than Maher.

I haven't seen much of anyone defend him, other than a few liberals and free speech advocates.

In the end, all that matters is results. Maher has gotten as much punishment from HBO over this as he's ever going to get.
