Christ is not some "hippy"

there does need to be balance. yes, Jesus taught us to love our neighbor as ourselves, to do for others what we'd want them to do for us, and to forgive one others' debts.

yet He also had some firm things to say about sin, discipline, discipleship, hell, and His own unique place between us and God.

the Christian who wants to truly emulate and know Christ, and not just someone's idea of Him, should understand that in Him, both aspects are one. He is more than simply a "get out of hell free ticket"- He has commanded us to love and serve one another as He has done, if we want to be worthy of His name. and He is more than a liberal hippy icon who condones all things in the name of love- He has directed us to turn from sin and from irresponsible living if we want to truly belong to Him.

yes. Jesus is talking about the division which His name will bring to peoples. a daughter will come to believe in Him, and her family will reject or threaten her for it. a son will come to follow Christ and His brothers and parents will disown him. a man will come to believe in the Lord Jesus, and his own family will turn him in to the police. this happens often.

following Jesus is often not easy. but if we know Him for who He is, and have trusted Him, then doing anything else would be ridiculous, and a terrible loss.

That`s the context I see it in.

Thanks!
