Researchers believe that some happiness habits are easier to build than others. So rather than starting with whatever happiness habit is currently the most popular—meditation! self-care!—you’ll likely be better off starting with habits that are easier or more fun.

The broaden-and-build theory suggests that experiencing positive emotions broadens our mindset and builds our psychological, intellectual, and social resources, allowing us to benefit more from our experiences. By starting with easy or fun practices, you may be able to get a jumpstart in happiness, subsequently boosting your sense of self-efficacy and propelling you forward in the happiness-building process. And luckily, now there are lots of these easier-starter activities online.

Illustrating this theory, one study showed that people who felt more positive emotion in the beginning of a happiness program reported greater improvements at the end. By going after the low-hanging fruit of happiness, you can build up reserves of confidence and good feelings that may help you tackle the trickier skills later.

A recent Harris poll reported that only 33% of Americans describe themselves as being “very happy.”

So does that mean that not all happiness is equal? Assuming there are different grades of happiness, how can we go from minimal, short-term happiness, to long-term happiness which no doubt equates to being very happy?

Short-term happiness would be the thinnest form of happiness, I imagine, because it means you’re only happy for a reason. In other words, you got a new job, a new relationship, or maybe you’re finally getting that divorce — and therefore, you’re happy.

Happiness is slippery. It doesn’t like to stick around. We know we’ve had it before, but it’s gone away, and we know there are certain things we have to do to find it again. Certain ducks have to be in a row. After all, if you didn’t have to do anything to be happy, you wouldn’t do anything at all. It can’t be too hard to find. Other people seem to be finding it all right.

Yet for all our efforts, we never seem to get this happiness problem nailed down, and there’s a very good reason for that.

When we start talking about solving the problem of unhappiness, it’s hard to avoid the topic of Buddhism. I know not everyone is a fan, but they have lain some important groundwork, even for those of us who like the idea of improving our quality of life but aren’t prepared to buy the whole package, with all its baldness and orange robes. Despite its promises of peace and enlightenment, I haven’t leapt in with abandon, so don’t worry, this article doesn’t delve into pratitya-samutpadas and tathagatagarbhas. It’s about a plain-jane concept you know very well: happiness.

Yeah, that's right. I'm telling you to not care about what I say, or what anyone else on the Internet says, for that matter. All this stuff works for me, and I find it totally freeing to lay down so many of the things I used to spend so much time caring about, but that doesn't mean we're in the same place on our journey. You have to do you. I say this because sometimes I'll read an article like this about stuff I shouldn't care about and then I'll feel inadequate because I can't stop caring about certain things. And then I remember that the person who wrote it is just another person, like me, and that just because they're sharing their thoughts doesn't mean they're law, or that they're made to fit my experience. Take what resonates and then DGAF about the rest. Real talk.

Wasn't that freeing? Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go soul search for more things I can stop caring about to make more room for joy in my life.

It’s one of the most difficult challenges for most of us (myself included): how not to get mad when someone else gets mad at you. How not to feel bad when someone criticizes you. How not to feel unhappy when your lover/partner is unhappy with you.

The emotions of others can vary wildly throughout the day, and if we allow our happiness to be tied to how everyone else is feeling, we’ll constantly be on a rollercoaster, happy one moment and then plunging into anger, sadness, disappointment the next.

How do we get off this ride? It’s not easy, but there are some things I’ve found to help. Let’s first look at why we get sucked into the emotions of those around us, then what we can do to stop it, and finally how we can learn these skills.

Happiness living in the moment -

The best way to enjoy the time that you're in now is to focus your attention on what is actually happening during the moment. Even if it's "hump day," see what you do to maximize your experiences. Yes, it's difficult if you're in a mundane job that doesn't engage you mentally. Things are even worse if you're in a job in which you often become frustrated and angry. Within those constraints, though, look for the little things that will motivate you and keep you engaged. Research on "self-determination theory" shows that the more you feel that you're controlling the circumstances of your job, the happier and more productive you'll be. So look for those little ways that you can feel a sense of accomplishment.
