Cross or Upright Stake

I doubt the Romans would use unnecessary wood, but the conclusion is up to you, also based on the terminology and subsequent translations. More that you talk about it the more convinced I am that whatever was construed as a crossbeam was the sign, unless you have some evidence to the contrary, and I'm talking about images or artists' depictions.
The crossbeam served a purpose. That they used a crosspiece is historical. You seem to believe that they used just a pole. Why do you believe that?

You've never seen ancient depictions of crucifixion before? You should Google them. Look for scholarly sources, not the Watchtower.

Oh, I think @Subduction Zone is right that he was nailed to some version of a cross.
"some version." Not saying that a sign over his head could not be viewed eventually as a version of a cross? In essence, it doesn't really matter because of the way some people both venerate and literally worship the cross, whether they want to acknowledge it or not.

Ancient meaning how old? Since you mentioned it, would you have any verification of how old a picture of a "cross" is?

A sign isn't a crossbeam.

Also, people don't worship the cross (at least not any mainstream Christians; perhaps there are some odd small sects who do, buy I haven't heard of them). "Worshipping the cross" is mostly a silly caricature that the Watchtower and other groups put out there for ideological reasons.

I was asking you - if you've explored this subject in depth, I assume you know how old crucifixion is and how old the images are we have that depict it. Do you?
