Discrimination in the Catholic Church

Annoyingly Progressive Since 2006
You laugh but the Catholic church is based off the Bible.
True dat, except that the priesthood was not always celibate, Purgatory didn't come about until 1700 years after Jesus died, and the Immaculate Conception wasn't thought of until the 19th century...

Only converted Jews can act in persona Christi because Jesus was a Jew. This makes just as much sense as saying only men can act in persona Christi because Jesus was a man.

Just people who had other jobs aside from being a priest can be priests.

Jesus was a carpenter and Pedro a fisherman.

Only poor people can be priests. Forget living in a palace and having gold toilets

Only people who were born near Nazareth can be priests.

Only bearded people can be priests.

BTW: You were not really a priest unless you were crucified at the end of your life.

Exactly the problem.
They ought to try basing the Church off the Scriptures the Bible is loosely based on.
Oh wait, with all the time and effort they spent picking and choosing which scriptures were to be in the Bible.....

I never understood this position. No mortal human being is close in character to Christ, yet the Catholic position seems to be that if a person has a penis, then he's "close enough".

What is it about the difference between the genders that makes a man qualified to stand in for Christ but a woman unqualified? Why is gender the defining characteristic that allows a person to do this? Why not any of the rest of Jesus' various characteristics?

Edit: and before you bring out the line about how Christ is the "bridegroom" and the Church is his "bride", I should point out that this would be just as much support for an all-female laity as it would be for an all-male clergy.
The priesthood has never been for women. The Apostles were all men, as well as thous the Apostles ordained. And the Priesthood is a carry on from the Old covenant.

And Jesus was not a women.

These were beliefs that were believed yet not declared article of faith.

Like the assumption. That was not declared an article of faith until..I believe the 50s? I am not sure, but I know its an ancient belief. In fact even the EO believes in the assumption (the Dormition of the Theotokos) but have not declared it dogma.

On the celibacy part, you are right. And this could be changed.

They were all poor though, and that is clearly not a requirement.

To be fair, there is a high amount of discrimination ini the bible, so to say that a church based in the bible is prone to discrimination is hardly an unbeleivable argument.

We are talking beleives here, no need to get personal.

Chill dude, and blessings :)

No that is not true. Diocesan priest do not usually take vows of poverty but promises to stay away from materialism, to live simple. But Priest who are members of orders, like Franciscans, take vows of poverty and are not allowed to really own anything.

Women are valued and regarded with dignity in the Church. Outsiders say they are discriminated against, yet this is not true for the many religious women. They take on very important roles, yet are somehow discriminated.

And its non-sense that an atheist like him would come into this thread just to troll.

But they are not mandated to be poor (edit: the totallity of the priesthood, I mean). All of Jesus apostles were born poor and stayed poor. By the reasoning used to make them all men, they should all have been born poor too, and stay that way.

The point still stands. The bible itself does discriminate women a lot, also promotes genocide, and slavery when taken literally (Old Testament).

This is not a DIR, everyone has the right to put opinions here, even if they are against the catholic church. If you feel he is trolling you have the right to talk to an admin, if s/he does not see it as trolling, then he is in his right to keep making his opinion heard.

It's not like the reason men can't give birth is because there are rules against it. The Catholic Church made rules to prevent women from attaining roles of authority in the Church hierarchy, and you're arguing that the reason for the rule is some mystical Christhood that women ain't got.

It's discrimination. Just call it what it is.

-Nato

its not discrimination.

Anyway, the catholic church did not make up the rule...God did. Basic reason is because he gave men the responsibility to take the lead. The men were to be the ministers...not the women

and the fact is, women have enough responsibility to take care of without the added role of leading a congregation. Amen to that!

How nice of the Almighty to excuse women from positions of authority in the Church hierarchy so they could finish their housework.

Not to mention the fact that in persona Christi wasn't cemented either. If I remember correctly, certain teachers with Gnostic slants would draw lots to see who would administer the Sacrament, including women and pagans.
