Does Atheism Lead to Immoral Behavior?

There's nothing defiant about it for me.
I've never believed.
There's no good reason to believe.
This is simply a default position....like not
believing in Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny,
fiscally conservative Democrats, & small
government Republicans.

Defiance might occur among former believers,
who discovered that they've been taught, &
believed in a religion that's fraught with myth,
hypocrisy, & even heinous prescriptions.
I don't envy them. There's is a difficult path.
For me there was never a time that God wasn't obvious to me. Even in sporadic church attendance wherein I didn't believe the exaggerated portions of the scripture books, I still knew the presence of God.

I

I've read that one of the highest proportions of god-believers is amongst prison populations.

Because of the way power exists in prisons, it is convenient for a prisoner to convert to Christianity just to be seen as favorable to the guards.

So, I am always a bit skeptical of this type of statistic.

What is more convincing is the correlation between geography (Bible belt or not) and a variety of social ills from unplanned pregnancies, to crime rates, to other major social ills. That suggests that it is the culture that promotes many of these problems.

When I was very young, I trusted the adults when they said there is a God. But, when I prayed myself, I never felt anything other than myself. That lead to skepticism. Watching the hypocrisy of believers, the unbelievable stories in the Bible (even as a kid I didn't believe them), the judgemental attitudes, I realized the 'believers' were not a good group of people.

I don't think I ever believed in God after I was 6 years old. There was simply no evidence and everything I saw pointed the opposite way.

I remember being shocked when I realized that people actually *believed* the stories. I thought of them as nice morality tales similar to Aesop's fables.

Do you defiantly reject the existence and authority of the Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Or do you simply not believe the FSM exists at all?
I know the spaghetti monster God was invented to mock believers. I also know that there is a similar motive among Atheist who join "religious forums", to undermine faith, mock and condescend people of faith.

No, it was invented to point out the bad arguments theists use all the time. ALL the arguments for a God also apply to the FSM.

And yes, I believe that God was also an invented fiction, but invented to control people.

“Immoral behavior” as in “sexual promiscuity”?

I would think so.. Why would they restrain themselves? “Two consenting adults, there’s nothing wrong”….right?

Now if you mean “immoral behavior” to be thievery, murder, etc., no.
Atheists, like any humans, have a conscience, and thievery, murder, etc., are viewed as aberrant
behaviors in almost any society.

So let’s get back to sexual unrestraint: quite a few people, atheists and otherwise, are recognizing the negative effect that promiscuity is having on their respective societies.

There are many articles, quite a few of them peer-reviewed scientific articles, highlighting the problems that arise from such promiscuous lifestyles:

There are soo many more! Google it.

The Bible has condemned those practices for centuries…..

It is actually a good argument supporting the Bible as being from a Higher Source. — Jeremiah 10:23… “O Jehovah, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.”

What does Jehovah ask us to do?
Isaiah 48:18….”Oh, if only you would pay attention to My commandments! Then your peace would become just like a river…”
So the righteous and holy think they raise
themselves with put- downs of others.
We already knew that, no need to elabourate.

You knew even before anyone told you about "God".

Trying to reason people out of a position that they weren't reasoning into is a waste of time.

Atheism as you are practicing it here in this exchange is an attempt to control people.

It does show that god- believin' doesn't do a whole lot
to affect morality.

..and that depends of your definition of "good" .
Believers are guilty of bad deeds, yes .. but again, that proves nothing.
It does prove that religion doesn't make all people good.
Nor that only good people believe in religion.

I see things very simply....
People are good when they do good things instead of bad.
Bad people do bad things.

Whatever people believe about gods, fairies, spirits, devils,
angels, witches, prophets, books, & ghosts is irrelevant.

You confuse God with religion.
Almighty God is BEYOND need to control people [if He exists].
..and if that was God's intention, He would be doing a very poor job!
How can you claim- honestlyy-to know what "god" " needs" or
does not need?
There's no credibility in the way you guys just say thungs.

No fair asking for Believers to make sense.
Fundamentally, religion is all about human feelings.
Those make some sense, eg, fear of death, fear of
calamity, wonder about why reality is what it is.
They invent explanations that comfort.
But the leap to belief in very specific dogma is what
makes no sense, eg, 10,000 year old Earth, stoning
adulterers, the immorality of eating pork, making
women wear bags over their heads.
