This is why I don't much pay attention to the initial news reports about events like this.
I find people's reactions to them much more interesting and educational than the actual news, until there has been time to separate the facts from the dross.
Tom
I read initial reports anyway.
I just gots to know!
(Even though I know I don't know.)

Any clues if the assailant is Muslim?
I'd ignore clues for now.
It's too early to say much about the guy......except that he's a murdering ***** ***** ***** ***** who'd ***** ****** his own ****** ****** ******.

(Note: Even my own brain censored what's lurking behind those asterisks. So I don't know what they replaced.)

From CNN's Website...

The shooter, Omar Saddiqui Mateen, is 29 and from Fort Pierce, about 120 miles southeast of Orlando, two law enforcement officials told CNN. He had been trained as a security guard, CNN has learned.
Orlando authorities said they consider the violence an act of domestic terror. The FBI is involved. While investigators are exploring all angles, they "have suggestions the individual has leanings towards (Islamic terrorism), but right now we can't say definitely," said Ron Hopper, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Orlando bureau. <source>

Speaking about NEEDLESS death and suffering:
http://www.madd.org/?referrer=http://search.aol.com/aol/search?enabled_terms=&q=m.a.d.

Yes, I DO realize this is about unintentional deaths and injuries.
Or is it?

A drunk driver is a potential killer yet we don't beat the drum to ban cars.
After all the PERSON behind the wheel is the target of legislation which seems
quite sensible to me.
NO ONE wants a drunk behind the wheel of an UNguided deadly missile.
Every 2-hours, three people are killed in alcohol-related highway crashes.
http://www.rita.dot.gov/bts/sites/r...tions/by_the_numbers/drunk_driving/index.html

I do understand that the drunk driver has no intent to kill people on the roadways.
However intentions are irrelevant aren't they?

I don't know how this murder got the guns but I'm deeply interested in learning
how.
I own guns. Firearms are part of my culture, the way I was raised.
to respect the lives of others by being responsible.
Samo with the way I drive my cars.

Mass murder with a knife?
Google it, you might be surprised.

Mass murder by vehicle. Yup Google that also if you like.

Politicians NEVER miss an opportunity to turn a tragedy into a campaign issue.
That goes for ALL politicians.
Killery ranks tops for this unless it's about Benghazi.

Perhaps you have more faith in your own perception and wisdom than I do.
One of the things I remember from the the Ferguson incident was news reports about a young black man swearing, under oath, that he had seen the cop shoot Brown in the back while Brown was running away.
It was quickly proven wrong, but thousands of people glued to the local news were forming opinions about what happened and what it meant.
So I try to avoid "knowing" incorrect things. I know that I am just as biased as the next person, the media has a way of profiting from exploiting that, and I would rather wait a bit for the dramatic details.

Pro-gun people are also pro-gun control.
But there sure is a lot of diversity on what kind.
I don't want to turn a tragedy thread into a political one, but since we are well on our way...

Just my .02 on why this issue is so dang hard. I am pro gun control and I can cite reasons from other nations as to why it is effective... but I can never be sure. I am a data guy and I desperately want this issue to be black and white, because then the correct choice is obvious. I really have nothing of substance to offer but frustration because I want this problem to be solved but despite all best efforts from folks on both sides of the argument... we are having a really tough time.

No, I don't trust my judgement.
But I'm aware I shouldn't trust it.
So I think I'm safe watching the news coverage change as the dust settles.

We can't presume too much.
On the Chinese & Iranian sides of my family, they have Muslim sounding names, but few (if any) here are Muslim.
(For Chinese names, a 2 syllable family name is a giveaway.)
