Gender specific events

Last month, the PTA for a public middle school had a father-daughter sweetheart dance. It was a huge success. The PTA decided they needed a similar event for the boys in the school, so they wouldn’t feel left out. They reasoned that the boys wouldn’t be interested in a dance, so they decided on a mother-son science & math event. This event generated a storm of controversy from people for various reasons. Some said that the event presumed that girls aren’t interested in science & math, some said a dance event for girls and science event for boys enforced traditional stereotypes, and others said it wasn’t fair for the boys to have their own separate event in which the girls were excluded.

The thing that seems like a double standard to me is that no one protested about the initial father-daughter dance or said that it wasn’t fair to the boys.

Why do you think no one said anything about the first event?

Should public schools be allowed to have any gender specific events?

I wouldn't have wanted to go to a mother son dance, as, back then, dances were meant to provide the opportunity to meet eligible girls. My sisters felt the opposite about the father daughter dances, not that I can figure that out.

They should've done both together.

I dont understand why people are always demanding equality. are you really so blind as to not see the difference between males and females? if there is difference of the least kind than there is no equality. i also dont believe there is equality in men alone or women alone. even men should be fragmented and unequal.

Not really.
How about next year they host both events, in a nongender way. Let the participants decide to attend one, both, or neither.

This is what should be done. Especially given the increasing prevalence of same-sex couples.

That, and my personal opinion that the social construct of gender should die a horrible, horrible death.

you dont think it has a grounding in gods? what gods do you believe in?

Because I am an egalitarian. Give everyone the same choices and support and opportunities, then let them decide where it takes them from there.

Youre not. Would you give the same opportunity to a mentally disabled person (think down syndrome) to become a professor at a university the same as you would to a normal person? so you would fight for mentally disabled persons to join the academy?

What would happen if someone proposed a separate event just for LGBT people? There would be a huge outcry. All event should be open to anyone who wants to attend.

Yes, I am an egalitarian. I consider it moral to let go of primitive ethical notions, like gender roles.
So while I think everyone should have the same chance to "join the academy" (whatever that means), I don't think that comparing women to downs syndrome is at all reasonable.
In fact, I see it as the source of your bigotry. You think that women are similar to mentally retarded men.
I have four sisters, and I would bet that any of them could kick your ***.

I sense a controversy brewing.
I guess it's because men are the stronger gender and women feel insecure. Added to that that women want power and money now in west (under the guise of equality) and men who like to look after their own interests (their partner) and an overreaction from chauvinists women means, as per normal, we have to lift women up in order to put them on the same level as men. Thankfully, we now have such a false world in the modern day era that we can do just that.

Paranoid chauvinism.

Yes, but that's not a very good angle if you want money and power, now is it.

Social construct? How so? The differences are obvious. Though it is amazing what you can achieve with a pair of trousers.

what would you gain from this? your girlfriend being gawked at by hundreds of strangers? you looking at other peoples wives?
I'm not looking to gain anything. I just think females should have the option of being saddled with having to wear a bra or not. In Europe topless sunbathing is quite common and acceptable.

Couldn't they just have a family dance? A parent/child dance/party? They could have organized a combination party where there was both dancing and perhaps some types of partner games as well. The whole family could attend and boys and girls and mothers and fathers could all do what they wanted.

I am all for women being able to go topless. It is insane that we have the hang up about women's breasts/nipples that we do in society. They are not genitals. They are breasts. If men can show theirs there is no reason women can't show ours. Especially when there are many men with breasts far larger than many women's. :p
