Health Care and the US Elections

Not if you had a sufficiently high level job where the company would shell out the 10,000 +$ for a health plan with a small annual out of pocket cap.
These are considered just the cost of getting qualified personnel. System works fine so long as you are employed.
But then there is my friend from Ghana, he was doing fine till he went through a stretch of employment without healthcare after the company we worked for sold out and moved. Couldn't afford his Hep C drugs and had to get a liver transplant. Now he really costs the insurance companies money.
I suppose we could blame it on Obama care since they can't deny his coverage for all the immune suppression drugs for his pre-existing now condition instead of the anti-virals he had been taking for years.
Or, he could move somewhere where not being wealthy wasn't a death sentence when things go south.

We tolerate the dishonest business of car insurance companies because cars are objects...
but cashing in on people's health is highly immoral.

According to AI
Socialized medicine, also known as universal health care, has many pros and cons, including:

  • Pros
    • Equal access: Socialized medicine ensures everyone has access to medical care, regardless of their ability to pay.
    • Cost control: Centralized health care models can get better deals from drug manufacturers and medical suppliers.
    • Administrative cost reduction: Socialized medicine eliminates the need to deal with private insurance.
    • Higher life expectancy: Countries with universal health care have significantly higher life expectancy than countries without.
  • Cons
    • Increased taxes: Socialized medicine may require higher taxes.
    • Wait times: There may be wait times for medical procedures.
    • National debt: Socialized medicine may add to the national debt.
    • Reduced choice: Some argue that individuals would lose some choice under socialized medicine.
    • Quality of care: Some fear that the quality of care would erode if doctors and nurses became government employees.

Interesting part about these types of hot button discussions is that everyone or at least many seem to be unaware that Medicaid exists. It is not perfect, it should be improved, and it is a great example of what happens when the US government gets involved with such things. NO need to throw the baby out with the bathwater here folks.... start from where we are in the US, Medicaid, look at it, find out what works find out what doesn't, and why it doesn't and improve it...

But no, politicians can make healthcare a hot bed topic to further devide the nation and garner votes.... no votes in standing up there saying we have a system in place, and I know it needs fixed, so I'll fix it..... better to say people are denied healthcare and we will change that...free health care for all....well.. frankly, I don't want it or need it, I will pay for my own and save the country money....

Here is a story, that could get me in trouble, but the state in which I work wanted to eliminate all of the state employee health insurance plans and go with Obama care.... but only for the employees.... the politicians who were attempting to make this decision were going to keep their state health insurance..... welcome to the reality of politics in America....

Cuz of the stridency & buzz words.
You're pretty strident about cop misbehavior said the kettle to the pot. The reason I have a strong view about them is the same reason that you have one about cops.: too many examples of bad behavior. This is just one example of putting patients last so that those on the top can benefit. Overcharging for drugs is another.

Senate panel holds Steward hospital CEO in contempt, teeing up potential criminal charges

In a July hearing, lawmakers contrasted de la Torre’s multimillion-dollar compensation and luxury purchases with his hospitals’ challenges to stay solvent. In a hearing last week, current and former Steward staff members described their struggles to deliver safe and prompt health care without adequate equipment or supplies.
De la Torre defied the panel’s subpoena to appear at last week’s hearing.

I favor a single payer system that allows
private care to serve those able to pay.
It's a "Plan B" to avoid the inevitable
failure of government to properly fund
health care, thereby causing long waits
for poor service.

No matter how often I post this, lefties
continue to be utterly unaware of it.
Tis as though all you guys know is to which
tribe you've assigned each poster.
The Swiss system is close to this. There's a basic coverage for everyone with various insurance companies offer. People can pay extra for better coverage.

And I'll note the stridency about your post as well, comrade.

The question "does the US government pay for cancer surgeries" is a legitimate question.
If you don't want to answer, it's totally fine.
But don't say it's irrelevant...please.
From AI

Yes, Medicare covers many cancer treatments, including:

  • Chemotherapy
Medicare covers chemotherapy for cancer patients who receive it in a hospital, doctor's office, or clinic. You may pay a copayment or 20% of the Medicare-approved amount depending on where you receive the treatment.

  • Radiation treatments
Medicare Part B covers radiation treatments for cancer.

  • Anti-nausea drugs
Medicare Part B covers anti-nausea drugs that are taken by mouth or intravenously within 48 hours of cancer treatment.

    • Breast prostheses
Medicare Part A covers the cost of surgically implanted breast prostheses after a mastectomy if the surgery is performed as an inpatient. Medicare Part B covers breast prostheses after a mastectomy if the surgery is performed as an outpatient.
    • Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scans
Medicare Part B covers LDCT scans for lung cancer screenings if you meet certain conditions, including being over 55, having a history of smoking, and not currently having signs or symptoms of lung cancer.

Medicare also covers other cancer-related services, such as clinical laboratory tests, counseling to prevent tobacco use, and principal illness navigation services.
Medicare costs depend on several factors, including your health care provider, the type of facility, and other insurance you may have. You should check with your plan to make sure your drugs are on the formulary and to check the tier in which the drug is listed.

And there's Medicare.
I have that.
And I buy supplemental insurance for better coverage.
It's not perfect, but it's better than fervent naysayers admit.

I'm *REALLY* happy with Medicare having put up with various private group insurance at places I worked. I know ahead of time what's covered. The rules are are hidden so I can find the criteria for judgement. With original Medicare I bought supplemental coverage which says that if Medicare plays they'll also pay. And so forth. I think that anyone who wants that should be able to have Medicare if they pay the full premium.

Aye, there are those who cannot see any good.
They dwell only upon imperfections, believing
that's all there is.

Let’s not ignore that the United States leads the world in medical innovation and technology. There must be some reason for that, and I sometimes wonder if we go too far down the socialist route, if the United States will lose its innovative edge to the detriment of the world.

In other words it doesn't cover a surgery to remove the cancer...but only additional kinds of care.
Which are much cheaper...so it's paradoxical that it doesn't cover the most expensive operation.

I'm against insurance companies, CEOs that get wealthy while patients suffer etc. Medical innovation needs to be taken into account as you note.
