If I were not a _________, I'd probably be a _________.

I was tempted to say "Wiccan" since they throw the best parties, but I find the ritual in most circles to be excessive to my personal tastes.

If I were not an Independent Nichiren Buddhist, I'd probably be a something that wasn't such a mouthful!

Actually I'd probably be a gay Baha'i, seeming as I'm more or less half-Baha'i-half-Buddhist at the moment anyway. That's because it has many points I agree with. The whole World Peace goes with Kosen Rufu (Peace Via Individual Happiness)

If I weren't an atheist, I tell you what I'd do
I'd become a Messianic Jew
Crazy 'bout that Yeshua
Yes, I'm crazy 'bout that Yeshua
Gonna be a Messianic Jew and cruise on up and down the road.

Actually, I doubt I'd ever become a Messianic Jew, but I needed a rhyme.

(Apologies to all actual Messianic Jews and to Steve Miller, Alan Jackson and anyone else involved in writing or performing Mercury Blues).

If I were not an atheist, I would be a deist.

+1 me too

It's something different, and yet not such a big jump really... go from "no god" to "no personal god." At this point it would be the only option.

However I do like a lot of aesthetic aspects of some religions; my problem is that I'd have to buy into it all, not just the cool bits, and that simply cannot be done from my current perspective.

If I were not a Mormon, I'd probably be a Baha'i. Why? Well, I don't think I'd be very comfortable in any other Christian faith. Most of them would require that I become a trinitarian, which I could never do. There are a number of reasons why I don't get warm and fuzzy feelings from traditional Christianity. The Baha'i Faith is one of such inclusion. I love the tolerance they show towards all of the world's religions. (I could probably even keep a few of my LDS beliefs if I just didn't broadcast them.) I have also enjoyed the few verses from the Baha'i scriptures that have been posted on RF. They're really beautiful.

If you weren't a _________, what would you be?

If I were not a Christian, I'd be a ganster. They have a code of ethics and enjoy being top dogs.

I'm with Angellous, I think I might be some kind of Buddhist. I don't think I could be a theistic non-Christian, but I would be left with transcendental hunger and a need also for a sublime spirituality, like the Buddhist one.

If I weren't an atheist, I would probably be a Quaker.

Actually, I'd say there's still a small but realistically non-zero chance that I'll end up as a non-theist Quaker anyhow.

I've actually just recently made the acquaintance of some Quakers through my campus. The gave me some literature, free pizza and we discussed peace in Quakerism for well over an hour, ending in a 15 min. silent prayer session. It was quite interesting.

The idea of a god existing makes no sense. I already respect my elders and other living things, I already seek enlightenment, and I already try to live in the moment. Reincarnation presents a bit of a problem (no evidence), but in my understanding, it's not such a core belief that it couldn't be given up for a slightly modified Buddhism.

Yes, I have a deep and abiding respect for the Quakers.

Yeah, I find it interesting, too. I tried attending a local Quaker meeting for while and read quite a bit by and about Friends. It wasn't a perfect fit for me (and not even because of my lack of belief in God - I gather it's a rather contentious issue in the denomination, but I see how one could be a non-theist while still being a Quaker), but it resonated much better for me than any other Christian denomination I've encountered so far.

I also became interested in some Eastern religions as well, at least in the broad strokes and general concepts (e.g. Shinto, thanks to my martial arts), but then I realized that I'd probably have the same opinion of Abrahamic religions if I wasn't brought up in a culture where they dominate... kinda like how they say that sheep are only picturesque when viewed from far away.

No-one said my religion :(!! WAA!!!

if i were not Hinduism i could not function. It's ideals are literally programmed within me, and i could not imagine being something else, not that i couldn't pray in a Church.
