Is America a Police state?

Now I'm loath to defend the vile institution that is the LAPD... and I absolutely don't put it past them to try to kill someone intentionally... but, in this case I have to reserve judgement (at least in part).
The disembodied shouts of a guy hopped up on adrenaline and rage are not proof of intent.
*edit: having said that, I'm open to and wont be surprised by further evidence that would show it was intentional.

Being a transwoman or other minority and carrying condoms is enough to justify being arrested.

If a New York police officer thinks your skirt is too short and you happen to be carrying condoms, that's reportedly enough evidence to arrest you. Molly Crabapple at Vice reports on a study released last year by the Sex Workers Project and the PROS Network. It reveals shocking stories of police stopping, searching, and hauling away women who are minorities or transgender and happen to have condoms in their purses.
Police claim they are discouraging prostitution by confiscating women's condoms or cuffing women who carry them.

Criminy! Getting arrested for doing nothing illegal other than fitting a profile?
I've been reading for years how NYC reduced its crime rate by going after people
for being possibly guilty of something. Having a police state can reduce crime,
but what a cost for those who get thumped by cops.

People think that the police or government is above the law whenever they break the law its not breaking the law but doing there job. :p

It's pretty insane.

Getting arrested simply for existing... for a growing percentage of the population is just something you have to accept may happen any time you poke your head outside.

EXCLUSIVE - U.S. to let spy agencies scour Americans' finances | Reuters

The Obama administration is drawing up plans to give all U.S. spy agencies full access to a massive database that contains financial
data on American citizens and others who bank in the country, according to a Treasury Department document seen by Reuters.

Interestingly, the article actually understates the full extent of financial surveillance already in place.

Given a choice, you'd eat a disgusting mish mash of genetic material in a baggie instead of a disgusting mish mash of genetic material between 2 buns?

Look, I know how a used condom looks like. I also know bananas are good food, and that condoms keep them fresh.

Now compare with this photograph of a hamburger:

I think I made my point.

US plan calls for more scanning of private Web traffic, email - Technology on NBCNews.com

The U.S. government is expanding a cybersecurity program that scans Internet traffic headed into and out of defense contractors to include
far more of the country's private, civilian-run infrastructure. As a result, more private sector employees than ever before, including those at
big banks, utilities and key transportation companies, will have their emails and Web surfing scanned as a precaution against cyber attacks.
