Worship is "worship", regardless if a person is worshipping a god, spirit, person, animal, place or an object.
You have heard of "hero-worship" before, haven't you?
Some Muslims do worship him. Some are even extreme enough to punish or kill in his name, especially if someone insult their prophet.
Insults to the prophet are treated as blasphemy, according to them, is treated as the same blasphemy against their god.
Take the naming-stuff-toy-Muhammad incidence or the Danish cartoons as examples. Especially with the later, the violences and murders committed in their prophet's name, have only shown to me that they are treating their prophet as god or god-like, hence an idol.
