McCarthy has been removed as Speaker of the House.

Ok, so what would happen now when there is no official speaker? If Biden dropped dead, and somehow as he fell he knocked Harris over and she hit her head, and they are both dead. Does the speaker pro-tem become President? The only thing I know about that guy is he has a strong gavel hand.

Or does to go down the list, I think the Secretary of State is next.
Good quetchin.

It is still possible the Democrats could put McCarthy right back in. That is if he chooses to run again.

But even if someone worse than McCarthy gets in, what happens? Remember we are talking about one half of one third of the government. The new speaker would put a bill to torture kittens on live tv, and even if it passed the House it would not pass the Senate, and no way Biden would sign it.

When the Republican took the House in 2022 I predicted the would get nothing done. I am going to double, triple, quadruple down on that. No matter who or what they get to be the speaker.
As bad as they were, at least the Republicans when Clinton was President managed to work with him. And they were quite successful too. I hate what MAGA did to the party, though it was heading that way for some time.

They shouldn’t always side with the party. But when one of them threatens anyone who votes with the Dems, and then they vote with the Dems is a hypocrite.
That's unsubstantiated. Party politics is the problem, not choosing a side. That style of bias is why racism still exists. It's wrong.

Sorry, it's been a long day and I don't have the energy to read all the posts so far...

But, here's my take:

Gaetz lost a round last Saturday...no chaos, no close of government...

But today he wins a round...No one is speaker now, and nothing can happen until one is elected. Any Republican who tries to take the post has to bend to Gaetz and company...so continued chaos...ad infinitum...exactly what Trump wants...

Does that mean party politics are what rules?

or are you just confirming that the crook must not be allowed in office ever again.

I think this demonstrates what could happen if the voters started voting in 3rd party members to congress.

They already do that about as often as it's likely to happen. However, our way of electing representatives, which hands power to the largest plurality, not necessarily the majority preference, pretty much guarantees that we will always have a two-party system. Occasionally, one of the two dominant parties could collapse, but a third party would fill the vacuum. That is what actually gave birth to the Republican Party when the Whig Party collapsed in 1854. when the slavery issue finally split that all-white party between northern anti-slavers and southern pro-slavers. The emergent Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln caused abolitionists to join with the remnants of the anti-slavery Whig members in a new dominant major party.

To make it possible for third parties to supersede one of the two major parties, we would need to change the way we choose election winners. First-past-the-post election victories will need to disappear. See Duverger's Law.

A Texas MAGA Congressman says he will file the paperwork and nominate Donald Trump to be the Speaker.

Jebus Price!

Someone also nominated Trump for Speaker of the House when they were trying to get the votes for McCarthy and went through 15 rounds of voting.

That was a bit weird. I thought that the Democrats would have voted to keep him. They did not like him because he did not deny the MAGA enough so the Democrats voted with the MAGA extremists.
We finally agree on something! You are correct, the (D)'s secretly want to have a solid MAGA face in the GOP to oppose in the coming election.

Of course they do. The American people don't like MAGA's. Dems want to run against them.
Additionally, Dems want to run against Trump for the presidency.
So all these people claiming Dems are using the justice system to keep Trump from running for president are bogus.

The most succinct summation I've seen is this, and it makes sense to me:

Democrats get it: Don't get in the way when your opponents are self-destructing.

So it appears that the Democrats voted with the MAGA Republicans to oust McCarthy. So they either agree with the MAGA Republicans or they just are playing politics to make the Republican look bad. Pretty ****ty way to govern the country isn't it.....party before country.
