Morality = The Golden Rule

Not really. I mean, yes, those are problems too, lol. But there are plenty of other examples without going to extreames. For instance here in the states we like people to look us in the eye when we're speaking to them, but in japan there are numerous instances where that is considered rude. So, it's best to treat other's the way they want to be treated than just forcing our desires on them.
Again you don't understand. The golden rule still applies to this Japan example. Our desire should be to not offend the other person by our culture, so we go into it expecting differences and not offending or being offended when our cultures are seemingly insulted. The reason why, is because it is not intentional disrespect, it is just ignorance. So we keep in mind do unto them this courtesy of respect, as we hope they do for us. It will grow for there into peace.

Hey it's your example ;).

No, it would be perfectly in keeping with the golden rule. If someone raped another because they enjoy being raped (horrible example by the way) then it is following the golden rule, becaue the person is treating others the way s/he wants to be treated. :cigar:

(By the way I like your new picture, cheese nips are great! lol)

the other person would not enjoy being raped, even if you do...
the golden rule is a two way street...

I'm using the standard definition of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" (itwillend's usage). If you're defining it as it's written Matthew 22:37, please let me know as that would solve most of our differences on the subject.

I never said any such thing.

You implied it when you stated that the golden rule is only half of the story...
that Jesus also commanded us to love God etc etc etc
Now if this differs from the Golden rule this means that in order to follow God's will and love God we must act accordingly...

which does allow for things like rape, murder, genocide etc...because we are "following God's will"

of course this is garbage....

but many religious people have used this to justify their actions.

Of course from an exoteric view you see a seperation between creator and creation
from an esoteric stance there is ultimatly no seperation, thus, ultimatly to love one another, is to love God...

so I would continue to argue, there really is only one rule....the others are all implicitly found within it.....

Nothing about the golden rule implies it is a two-way street. All it says it 'treat others the way you want to be treated'. Epic failure Cheese ;).

that is still following the golden rule
as you are doing somethign that the other person wants and enjoys
there is no interaction occuring where one person is doing something at the expense of the other.... the person wanting to be "hit" is WANTING to be hit
Well, I was talking about preferences on what your opponent hits you with during a wrestling match.
But my point was, just because you like something to happen to you, doesn't mean I will.

I agree totally unless your a sadomasochist. These few words encompass 95% of that intended by the concept of "Moral".

Cheers

Much like this:

Well, actually, that is not so much gross oversimplification as it just plain out right desperation.

 desperation....?

ack..never mind...I cant be bothered...
.......................................................................

In the beginning was God,

Today is God,

Tomorrow will be God.

Who can make an image of God?

He has no body.

He is as a word which comes
out of your mouth.

That word! It is no more.

It is past, and still it lives!

So is God.

Oh yeah, definitely desperation.

Of course not.
You have to go to great lengths to get your Golden Rule to be worth something outside the specific time, place and issue that it was meant for.

not really, it would involve explaining something beyond your comprehension

as an agnostic...it would be like me discussing period cramps with a woman
no matter what I say or do, my level of understanding is simply going to miss the mark... it is what it is... I don't have a womb...its as simple as that

Says you.
But then you are the one trying to make the Golden Rule more than it was meant for.

Your wishing to associate disagreement with non-comprehension is a problem only you can deal with.

not really, I am hardly the first to see it through esoteric eyes...

If all you see are trees, that is all you'll get

I see the forest, the lake and the river.

....

It is a simple truth, nothing exists in isolation
but this is never considered when it comes to things like the subject of this thread
why? because people are far happier to only examine the surface. Ironic really.

It might help if you gave a clear example as to why the Golden Rule doesn't equal morals. Can you do that, or are you only capable of snide remarks. I know you have it in you, so give it a try. Make a post, that can have a positive direction...
