Mosque at Ground Zero

What I think is weird is that people think it's somehow up to them. I mean, these are mostly ostensibly conservative people, who believe in private property and their right to do what they want without government interference--unless you're Muslim? Then somehow you need permission from the government? The only way it came up for vote at all was whether to give historic landmark status--to an abandoned Burlington Warehouse store? C'mon, people.

In a nutshell, it's their land, they want to build a community center, and why should they not be allowed to do so?

you can call it what you want... that's what everyone does now, tries to call things what they are not... a rose by any other name (like "community center") is still a rose.

Is the YMCA a church? Because their goal is to create a Muslim YMCA that's open to the community. I know this because I have spoken to them personally.

I have a better idea, lets call it what it is, and place it where it is actually going to be, and keep the misleading false information on FoxNews where it belongs.

Autodidact,
If that is the case, AND it stays that way, then I could see it being a beneficial aspect for the Muslim faith and towards the healing process.

I think if Afghanistan were a secular democracy, it would be MUCH more prosperous than it is today. In general, countries are not usually rich or poor because of natural resources, but because of good governmental decisions. For example, contrast Swizerland and Nigeria. Actually, a perfect example is to contrast Jamaica (impoverished, crime-ridden) with Barbados (prosperous, peaceful.) Their resources are virtually identical. The difference is the decisions the government made.
Their colonial histories look pretty different as well.

As Kathryn points out, you try to isolate the common factor. If you remove those countries that happen to have huge oil reserves, the Muslim countries are the poorest, most violent, war-torn, miserable places on earth. Even the Muslims are fleeing them in droves to migrate to the secular democracies they claim to despise. The common element: Islam.
I'm sure colonialism has nothing whatsoever to do with that.

Also, world-systems theory could provide another view.

Basically, I'm not going to deny that many Muslim countries have issues. I'm not going to deny many countries in general have issues, either.

But, to get back on topic: Muslims want to build a community centre. And?
I don't see any problem with it.

Do you guys have public planning?

Here we can lobby if we think the land use is unnesessary or against community spirit. Not long ago a muslim school was denied by the council for being against the common needs of the immediate community.

Kathryn

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
We have public zoning laws and a system to enforce or protest plans for land usage.

It's pretty well established in the U.S. that religious groups can do damned near anything they want. I mean, we frown on unlicensed children's homes, but nobody's going to tell you you can't have a religious school.

I'm assuming you're not addressing me, because I'm not American and I doubt you care about what the case is in Lebanon.

Interesting case. Is this it?

Oh wow i didn't know there were more of them. I live futher north on the Gold Coast. This is the only article i could find but the issue was resolved and protests got the allocation denied by the council: The Islamic School(s) We Had To Have And The Never Ending Muhammedan Grievance Theater… — Winds Of Jihad By SheikYerMami

In Lebanon are their restrictions on public buildings? I have to confess my knowledge of your country is very limited

Obviously you didn't read this.

Half-baked mosque - NYPOST.com

If you will read, they only own half of the building (which is actually two buildings, not one). ConEd owns the other half

So they ended up giving up due to the restrictions imposed? Makes sense if it was in a residential zone and any other building in the zone would be subject to the same restrictions.

I can't say mine's much better. :p My Arabic isn't fantastic, either. In Lebanon, it seems like if you have the money, you're practically free to do what you want. There are laws in place, of course. Darned if I know what they are.

That they didn't own the entire building is well known, that ConEd wasn't blocking it wasn't

That is their goal, and why the neighborhood supported it, including 9/11 survivors and families. There is no swimming pool and no public meeting space in that neighborhood. The Cordoba people want to make a community building that is sponsored by Muslims, and has room for prayer, but open to the entire community. They want to present a model of American unity against the terrorist concept that America is an enemy to Islam. Good job at screwing that up, Americans.
