Brides Of Blood: Special Edition
DVD/ Color/ 92 Mins./ UR./ 1968
In this second film in the BloodIsland trilogy, the indigenous chiefs of BloodIsland are kidnapping young virgins who will be sacrificed to the chiefs' god, The Evil One. Coincidentally, some scientists are visiting the island as part of their search for mutant life forms. When the scientists learn of the intended sacrifice, they battle the chiefs and The Evil One in order to save the virgins … and, eventually, the world.

A Brutal Orgy Of Ghastly Terror

saw Watchmen (the movie not the RF member :D) last friday..its freakin AWESOME! Was as if the comic had come to life! Its definitely NOT a kids movie though, so if you have kids you might wanna see it first before you let them watch it!
They changed some minor details a bit, but I think they were improvements. Maybe thats the real reason Alan Moore is mad?

Anyways, it rocks!

Watchmen, Micheal Clayton

Watchmen was overly violent in my opinion. A movie that was trying to seem dark just wasnt very dark at all. It just used lots of blood and violent acts to portray darkness. I found the Rorschach character to be very contrived. I understood what they were going for though. I just dont think they nailed it. It really bothered me that nixon kept getting elected. 2 times, 3 times. I dunno why. The prison scenes seemed forced. I think it moved the story just fine and served its purpose but it could have been portrayed much better. There was a lot of gratutious nudity that was fairly pointless. Not sure why they were trying so hard for an R rating and then doing so little with it. hehe. Overall I would reccomend it. If nothing else its not the same old crap... its got its own personality... it just needs to mature.

Clayton... It was fine. I didnt hate it. But I dont really have a lot to say. This type of crap happens everyday and everyone just closes their eyes and worries about whats for dinner or what have you. Blah.

Its 2 am... I said I was going to bed at 1. LOL. Gonna go watch When we were kings and then hit it. I has to work tomorrow.

COOL HAND LUKE
DVD/ Color/ 127 Mins./ NR/ 1967
javascript:void(0)What we have here is a failure to communicate! Lucas Jackson (Paul Newman) is a man who likes to do things his own way. That leads to a world of hurt when he winds up in a hellish Southern prison camp -- and on the wrong side of a sadistic warden (Strother Martin). George Kennedy won an Oscar as a fellow prisoner who tries to break Luke and then comes to revere him. The stellar cast includes Dennis Hopper, Harry Dean Stanton and Joe Don Baker.

WATCHMEN
Theater/ Color/ 163 Mins./ R/ 2009
Zack Snyder directs this adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons's graphic novel set in a parallel Earth in 1985, where despite the threat of nuclear war, superheroes are prohibited from using their powers. But when one of their number is murdered, the outlaw heroes, including Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup), Silk Spectre (Carla Gugino), Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) and Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), unite to defend themselves.

"Watchmen"

It's probably my age, but I thought it was silly, melodramatic, and pointlessly hopeless.

I've seen Watchmen twice now and what I liked I really liked, but a solid 80% of the film is Zach Snyder's failure. I suppose I'd give the film an overall C-, and it doesn't even compare to the source material. The violence was gratuitous and not nearly as explicit in the comic. It detracted from the story and had no real reason to be amped up to epic Snyder levels of gore. It struck me as silly- especially since all the makeup effects were surprisingly bad cg. Ugh... cgi blood is an abomination!

But my main point was to respond to the Nixon being reelected thing. The movie glosses over many details that were described in the comic- the big one being Nixon abolishing the twenty-second amendment. His success in winning the Vietnam war (not too difficult with a god on your side) bolsters Nixon's reputation and allows him unprecedented power. Another detail skimmed over in the movie that was explained in the comic was Dr. Manhattan inscribing the symbol for a hydrogen atom onto his forehead instead of the cheesy superhero helmet with an atomic symbol offered by some media types. The film shows Manhattan burning it into his forehead, but doesn't explain why he chose it, while the comic does. It's one of my favorite touches in the comic that the movie makes a nod to but doesn't follow through on.

Computer simulated fake blood sucks. And for some reason during the prison scene I just didnt see the need to don't want to spoil the gratuitously violent scene but you know.

It seemed overall kind of pointless. There was plenty of room to work there. And I kept imagining a scene from seinfeld. I think you can relate because of the actor but the scene I was thinking of is elaine trying to get a square. But they cant spare even one spare for poor elaine. But instead of trying to get a square he was trying to get a foot or two to work in but there just wasn't enough room. Cant you scooch over an inch? No there just isnt any room. One inch? Just move over... Nope....

But lets say it was cramped... What was the point in gratutiously doing this ridiculously unneccessary act twice? It would seem once done just once you should be good unless physics are in fact wrong? (Prisoner IQ perhaps? Addiction to violence?)

I dunno. Seemed unneccesary and then it was building and building to this climax which was flushed there and then again when it finally concluded by which the drama had been lost. Atleast for me.

LOL! Ahhhh... never thought I'd see a Seinfeld/Watchmen analogy. :D
Definitely agree with you. And while I admit I'm a comic nerd and likely too attached to the source, Rorschach's dialogue change made little sense there to me as well.

*****SPOILERS*******

In the film he says "Your hands, my pleasure", while in the comic it's "Your hands, my perspective", which makes a lot more sense. Rorschach isn't a sadist, he's the epitome of the vigilante and derives no pleasure from what he does- it's simpy his means of cleaning the world of scum. So the line in the comic implies not only that Rorschach has absolute control of the situation, but he's done so all along; he's not trapped with the scum, they're trapped with him.

The film's dialogue diminishes that for me.

I did enjoy his quip about not being locked in there with them. He did sound a lot like the dark night though and in a way that only fit him when masked... Notice how Bruce wayne talks completely normal? :)

Hillbillys In A Haunted House
DVD/ Color/ 88 Mins./ G/ 1967
Two country singers on their way to Nashville take shelter from a storm in an abandoned mansion, which they soon discover is not only haunted, but is also the headquarters of a spy ring led by the evil Madame Wong. This campy sequel to Hillbillys in Vegas features plenty of hick humor and country music amid the action, along with cameos from the likes of a young Merle Haggard and other country stars.

If it wasn’t for the stunning appearance of actress Joi Lansing, this movie would be very difficult to keep down.

COOGAN'S BLUFF
DVD/ Color/ 95 Mins./ R/ 1968
In this classic action thriller, Clint Eastwood is the cool and collected Walt Coogan, a cop who has left his small Arizona hometown for the raucous city of New York to bring back a prisoner, James Ringerman (Don Stroud). But when Coogan is caught in a rare moment of weakness, Ringerman gets the better of him and escapes. Now, Coogan must walk the unfamiliar and sometimes dangerous streets to hunt him down, no matter what it takes.

The inspiration for renting this movie was probably because of the inclusion of actress Tisha Sterling.

The fact that the movie had Clint Eastwood and was directed by one of my favorite directors, Don Siegel was an unexpected bonus.
