Music,Singing and Dancing in Islam...

i really don't know about dancing style you talk about. i do hope you reach God before you die.

we humans are weak creatures, ZoyaHayat. we easily fall into traps and our egos are desinged to follow useless desires. for that matter, everything in this world is there to distract us from God. everything is there to make us forget about God. in a day, i don't know how many times i forget God. not that i want to but it happens because i am not perfect. then i remember God again and feel sad. this nature of human. if you know the word for human in Arabic; insan, this word that mean human in English has two words within itself. ins and ans if i am not mistaken. meaning of these words are; the one who forgets and the one who remembers. i find it rather poetic. i am insan, so are you. we would both sometimes forget God. like any person who wants to reach God, there are certain things that we should do. i would like to remind you them as a friend. there are clear commands of Allah. performing salaats are very important. because when we perform salaats, we knowingly stand before God so it is not that easy to forget God. my advice to you as your friend is to perform your salaats. don't skip them. if you ever feel like you care for dancing more than salaat, ask help from God because that might happen. if it happens, you should know there must be something wrong. i am just saying it. i believe if you stick with salaats, reading Qur'an and fasting, something like dancing could not drive you away from God. does not matter what people think of you. there are many people who join Friday salaats but they don't love God. even as they performing salaats, they think of business or their plans for future..etc. God knows what's within our hearts therefor it only matters what God thinks of you. as you see, one single thought could distract people and pull their attention something completely worldly and on the other hand what they see as blasphemy could lead another to God thanks to their love and devotion for God. i sometimes pray and request God to end my interest in anything that distract me from God. because i know i might not be able to know, i might not be aware that i am drifting away. since it is God who lets everything happen, we should always ask for help even though we see no problem in our lives. this post of mine pretty much contains everything that i would want to say bout singing and dancing. i hope i did not cross the line

.

Thank you Lava for your response :)

this is a clear verse that talks about music
The Almighty: (And of mankind he who purchases idle talk to mislead from the path of Allah without knowledge, and takes a joke, for them a humiliating torment) (6) Luqman

hi :) this verse does not talk about music. it tells about people who have knowledge on useless science and those who use this science to distract people from God. the term useless science is used for people who hide true meaning of Hidayat. in other words those are people who have certain knowledge but that knowledge does not contain true meaning of hidayat and therefor it helps noone. on the contrary, it gives the wrong idea and it leads people to hell. if you read original text you'd see there it does not use word "talk". it says "empty, unnecessary -word-" other related verses to this one are;

(note that i take this translations from on-line Qur'an. i don't find these translations very good)

4:167 Those who reject Faith and keep off (men) from the way of Allah, have verily strayed far, far away from the Path.

4:168 Surely (as for) those who disbelieve and act unjustly Allah will not forgive them nor guide them to a path

4:169 Except the path of hell, to abide in it for ever, and this is easy to Allah.

What about sports? Do Muslim women play sport? Are there any restrictions on mingling and making friendships with non-Muslim people?
I'm getting the impression that films and cinema are probably highly restricted for strict Muslims as they are full of music and romance and violence etc.

In fact, what does a Muslim in the modern world do on a daily basis? Do many Muslim women have careers? What kind of hobbies are common for both men and women?

Is it less common for Muslim women to go out with friends day or night for fun? I ask because when I was recently in Los Angeles I went out for dinner on Thanksgiving night and there were a lot of Muslims eating out. But they were all men. ALL of them. I didn't see any Muslim women anywhere.

Sounds more like Universal Sufism than straight up Sufism.

I wonder why Muslim women can't expose their hair or arms or wear swimming suits in front of non-Muslim women. What do they think will happen?

Hiya Madhuri :)...

I personally think these men have shaped religion to a certain extent...

Exposing hair of Women is seen not good in many religions not only Islam...

I have posted a few links in a different thread about World religions and the hair/head covering-please do refer to it :)...the information is mentioned in the Dharmic Religion-Sikhism section...the thread is name :Who is a Sikh in your eyes?...

Yes that is correct Gursikh...

Both men and women cover not only in Sikhism but in Islam,Judaism,Christianity and many other religions too :)...

Thus, this point also emphasizes that all religions originate from one source-the same One God...be it Allah,Aum,Jehovah,Onkar etc...

Hi, Zoya. Your beliefs didn't seem to match up with what I've read of traditional Sufism and Islam. I was curious. I don't see many people belonging to or discussing Universal Sufism on here. Do you view Universal Sufism as a religion in it's own right or a syncretic philosophy?

Can any Muslims clarify their position on Hazrat Inayat Khan and Universal Sufism for me, if they could?

who's Hazrat Inayat Khan? sounds like he was a saint but i don't know him.

Sufism is Islam. in our culture, it is lived and we call it Tasavvuf

Khan is the "founder" of Universal Sufism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inayat_Khan
It is an offshoot of Sufism. It is kind of like Unitarian Universalism in that it allows the individual to encompass all religious beliefs into what bests works for them (or at least that is my understanding of it)

I know how Muslims view traditional Sufism I was wondering how they viewed Universal Sufism. Seems like maybe it's not well known?
