Wait, music, singing and dancing are forbidden in Islam? I didn't know that.

How do you make a distinction between "Music" and compilation of sound?

Dear people...

I want to know why Islam forbids(Haraam) Music,Singing and Dancing?...
Especially Women are'nt allowed-why?...

I was born into a Muslim household but i am a Spritualist,a Mystic,an Ascetic and a Divine Lover-to me Music,Singing and Dancing is a way to reach/attain God...

To me Music,Singing and Dancing is spiritual and a means to Love Allah(God)...

I hope i might get some good answers :) xxx

Salam ZoyaHayat :)

Not all music is haraam in Islam, it depends on the type of music. There are two different opinions among scholars about Music. Of course I should clarify here and before talking about the two different opinions about music is that music that abides by Islamic rules like anasheed or Islamic songs. The songs that are decent and that have decent objectives not like the music that talk just about lust....
There are those who says that halal music is the one without the musical instruments except the use of "Daf" the drum. And there is the opinion that doesn't forbid the use of musical instruments as far as they use it in the proper way.
You can have a look at the following thread about Islamic music which the second opinion agrees with.

Women in Islam are not allowed to sing in front of men and they are not allowed to dance in front of them. However, if there are no mixing between the two genders a woman can sing in front of another woman and can even dance, but to dance in a decent way. That's what we do actually while celebrating a mariage or any other celebrations.

According to Islamic rules, there should be no mixing of the two sexes in such ceromonies because women would like to celebrate it by dancing and singing ...etc.
The husband and wife would like to dance they can dance but not in front of others, they can do it while being alone in their room/house.

Hi, Zoya. Your beliefs didn't seem to match up with what I've read of traditional Sufism and Islam. I was curious. I don't see many people belonging to or discussing Universal Sufism on here. Do you view Universal Sufism as a religion in it's own right or a syncretic philosophy?

Can any Muslims clarify their position on Hazrat Inayat Khan and Universal Sufism for me, if they could?

Hiya No-body :)...

I have explained before in many other threads that Sufism is'nt Islam...nor it is a religion, faith, belief or creed...

Please do refer to my previous posts in different threads...

I would'nt like to comment any further on the issues of 'Is Sufism Islam?'-as i already have made it clear with the appropriate information...

where do you believe the name Sufism come from, ZoyaHayat? what do you believe a Sufi is or what a Sufi does? i don't know who told you Sufism is not Islam but i assume it must be someone who does not know what Islam is or someone who sees Sufism as a belief system where people worship creation. we know Sufism as Islam in Qur'an.

Wasalaam Peace :)...

Thank you Peace for your contribution...

I agree with you what you have just stated above :(...

Thus being a Sufi Woman i feel Music,Singing and Dancing to reach God is not wrong...as i myself do practice Kathak(a North Indian Classical form of Dance) whilst listening to songs of praise to Allah(Hamdh),songs of praise to Hazrath Muhammad(SAW) (Naaths),Bhajans(Hindu Hymns)and Shabad Gurbanis(Sikh Hymns) :)...
