"My Son Serves So You Can Be Free"

Military service and collective defense, of course, is an important part of any society. Nothing about this fact suggests that U.S. participation in Iraq and Afghanistan is "keeping us free".

How about freedom from foreign entanglements?
How about freedom from the hatred and terrorism of the people we agitate?
How about freedom from a burdensome military debt?

I could use a bit more freedom in those regards.

Maybe citizens who aren't under contract with the government quit whining and do something about it, because those of us citizens who are under contract can't?

What do you mean "under contract".

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Don't get me wrong - I love holding hands and singing songs. I love going to multicultural events and multifaith worship services. It all feels great, and I genuinely embrace peace and mutual respect.

But it's not ME I'm worried about, to be honest. It's the Napoleons, the Hitlers, the Caesars, the empires and their rulers. Rulers and kings are inevitably power hungry and will stop at NOTHING, no amount of carnage, to accomplish their goals.

The weaker, less armed will fall to the mighty. It's human nature and our common history. I want to be as prepared as possible to protect my own.

Jesus is the Christian's standard when it comes to peace and loving our neighbor. But Jesus and the early church leaders interacted regularly with Romans and Roman soldiers, and their work was not condemned or chastised. We can strive toward our goal of living peaceably with our neighbor without leaving ourselves and our country wide open for destruction.

We may not have peace in this world in our lifetimes -or in our childrens' lifetimes. We may have to wait for the next lifetime - the eternal one.

are you serious? , what service are you in? and why don't you get out, or are you in the MOB?

USN, it is the job of every service member to kill. Even if lets say i was a cook on the ship, my job is still designed around killing people. That's just the job of military's, i don't know if you have a tv, maybe just youtube military and see what I'm talking about. Why don't i get out? I'm under contract, just like anyone else. I can get out in 5.5 years.

When did I say I have a problem with it? I don't.

I have a problem with puss-ies who whine about what their military is doing, support the troops, and do nothing to try to change legislation or policy. I will kill so you can be free to whine, but I'm still free enough to be pis-sed that all y'all're doing is whining instead of using your freedom we've fought for to try to change things.

Not that I don't believe in having a good military, but right now that sign should read "My son serves so you can pay more in taxes for ridiculous wars that won't change anything".

More accurate might be "My son serves to go to college, or to have a job in this ****** economy"

You'd be paying the same taxes without the war, only we wouldn't be getting oil out of it ;P

Maybe the next time America fights a defensive war they can make this claim

It could happen any day. Those @*@# Canadians could send Human waves of polite Canucks over the boarder, forcing their socialized medicine down our throats. I say we should strike first and ask questions later. Whats next forced curling and hockey in High School.
