Opinion on the Atheist "Church"?

It is the gathering of friends, family and community that is the most beneficial aspect of a church, and that really has very little to do with "gods" and "worship".

Not the ones I've gone to- at my Churches, we tend to talk about God, sing about God, etc. It's different at picnics or potlucks the Churches have on occasion and we don't call those "going to Church"- even if it is at the building (which it usually isn't). The building itself isn't the Church- it's the body of believers. :)

Anyway, this is about calling an atheist gathering a "Church". I don't care what they call it, but the word "Church" is usually used for people practicing and preaching about God, religious faith, etc.

"It's hard enough trying to convince, some people, that atheism isn't a religion as it is."

So than it is important to you that people you don't even know don't form the opinion that "atheism" is a religion?

The atheists I've heard are the ones who don't like to be called a religion- not that I blame them. If they call their gatherings a "Church" people may associate them with religion- something they don't want. I believe that is what he was trying to say.

Pegg is incorrect, people don't need spirituality (well not in the sense she is using the word) but they need social interaction.

And this church won't last because people aren't bound by what they don't believe in.

It seems to me like the media gave it the name of a 'church'.
On their website I don't see them calling themselves a church.

Furthermore I think it's a lovely idea. A place for community, personal growth and good works. Sounds wonderful.

EDIT: Apparently they do use the word 'church' to refer to their congregation. Right on the home page. I read over it the first time. Silly.

I'm not going to get my panties in a twist over what a group of atheists decide to call their communal gatherings. If they have enough of a sense of humor to call it a "church", then so be it.

They don't. They call it the Sunday Assembly. I'm guessing I'm the only one who actually read the article.

From what I've read, the things they discuss have little or nothing to do with a lack of belief in god but rather they are about science, literature or music that they want to share with a community of like minded individuals. I see no reason why that wouldn't last.

Yes, because it's flat out wrong. You wouldn't send your kids to a school that teaches them wrong information afterall.

People tend to confuse atheism and anti-theism, but also non-theism and atheism.
