I doubt these were republicans. Probably the easily offended, we are the victim, I'm entitled crowd.
I'm not racist one bit but I watched several videos and everyone(99.9%) I seen running around in the stores and running out with all they could carry were black.(who will be first to say that statement is racist lol)

"PHILADELPHIA — Dozens of people faced criminal charges Wednesday after a night of social media-fueled mayhem in which groups of thieves, apparently working together, smashed their way into stores in several areas of Philadelphia, stuffing plastic bags with merchandise and fleeing, authorities said.

Police said they made at least 52 arrests. Burglary, theft and other counts have been filed so far against at least 30 people, all but three of them adults, according to Jane Roh, spokesperson for the Philadelphia district attorney's office.

The flash mob-style ransacking Tuesday night at dozens of stores including Foot Locker, Lululemon and Apple came after a peaceful protest over a judge’s decision to dismiss murder and other charges against a Philadelphia police officer who shot and killed a driver, Eddie Irizarry, through a rolled-up window."

Poverty is to blame.
Poor people need Lululemon yoga pants & the latest iphones.
(They're a Canuckistanian company anyway, so who cares if they lose money, eh.)

It is greed and it is best to punish people that break the law to this extent. A bit of prison time for all of them would make others think before they tried this.

I am all for various forms of reform, but one sometimes needs a stick to go with the carrot.

The majority of poor people don't go around looting. So it isn't poverty.
Lawlessness is occurring across the board. Look at our politicians. No, the majority of poor people don’t go around looting. It’s happened mostly with young people, but what kind of examples do they have or are there any consequences? I think it’s a sign of the times, biblically speaking …

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. 9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.

This is happening in the UK too, and possibly in many other countries. Whether it is down to current economic circumstances is not known but it could drive us into a Big Brother world quicker than it might have been - as to only allowing people to shop where an identity can be known.

I've heard of some of these "flash mob" attacks in various cities around the country. My impression is that someone sends a group text to a bunch of their friends, then word spreads. It would demonstrate an ability to organize and mobilize large numbers of people relatively quickly.

No, my liberal friends say that poverty is the cause.
And these big companies deserve no sympathy
cuz they have too much money, & too high prices.
The poor are all honest hard working people,
unlike the thieving fatcats who run businesses.

I'll bite. ;-)

It is racist, depending on why you are calling attention to it.

Is it because that "race," in terms of the history of why "race" is even a factor in American culture, may be demographically significant in these cases because of that history? Or is it because of an association of "black people" and "crime"?

I said that statement because "everyone(99.9%) I seen running around in the stores and running out with all they could carry were black"

I figured someone would see it as racist.

Another take on it:
Forty years of dog-eat-dog, greed-is-good, Neoliberal values, and -- surprise surprise -- social(ist) values have deteriorated considerably.

We live in a society where the citizens are commodities that can be exploited for profit through commercializing everything. Wealth, regardless of how you get it, is rewarded more than hardwork and bootstrap pulling.

We are taught that happiness and status can be bought but the symbols and toys aren't within everyone's reach. But it can be if you want to take a risk, and if you do and get caught, well, someone profits from that too. Prisons need inmates, news media needs clickable headlines, and politicians need fear mongering.

But what's the significance of it for you? Would you have done the same if they were white?

Well it is interesting that you would bring up the color of their skin. Maybe the store is in a black area/neighborhood. So most people around there would be black. Or if it was a flash mob, maybe the person who originated it was black, so their social media network was black also. I don't know. But you seem to be implying that being black causes you to be a criminal, and yeah, that would be a little racist.
