Rioting in Tottenham

I think the class thing really depends on where you go in England. I grew up in Oldham which had a very "working class and proud" attitude. My parents moved to Derbyshire and I live in Manchester now. Neither place really concentrates on class.

I find that people tend to insult the people who were born into money more than anybody else.

I will admit though that when people call the rioters "working class" it hits that Oldham bred nerve.

Well, it may be my partner's family had more cause to think and talk about class than most. His mum is the daughter of an Irish tinker docker who fought in both world wars. She was given a scholarship to go to one of the best schools in her area because she is very bright, but she experienced some pretty harsh treatment from both students and teachers while she was there because of her relative poverty. Basically, her successful pursuit of her chosen career moved her up a few notches on the social scale, but it was not the free and easy, well-oiled transition you all seem to be portraying. She's completely at ease with her working class roots and happy with her middle class career, but could have done without some of the nonsense getting from point A to point B.

Now you have brought up another issue...
"Tinkers and gypsies and travellers" I have linked them together because they are still an "ISSUE" as a people they need pay no taxes and receive no benefits. They are generally disliked and not trusted.

However just 30 years ago most pubs in Kent had signs saying no "Dogs and no didycoys" ( Gypsies and tinkers) They are still harassed by councils and the police.
Generally they are a unique sub culture That has no class at all. They are a people.

For a tinker to get a decent education even twenty years ago. was extremely unusual and very well done to your partners relative. It must have been extremely tough.

Even today few people respect them at all. Most that move into normal society would not admit their background.

Saying that ...They are lucky to be in the UK, as most of Europe hate them with a will.

I too live in Greater Manchester...Saddleworth.
Around here we are defiantly Yorkshire... and defiantly anti- Lancashire to a man.
As such class does not come into it ... we are just better.

Anyone got any thoughts as to why the riots were restricted to England? I know that a guy in Glasgow tried via Facebook to incite a riot there, but it came to nothing.

Why? anyway you ask her, shes your Queen too isn't she.

Technically, yes, but if she were to move to Canada she probably wouldn't be getting from commoners the nut-covering, awed deference to which she is accustomed at home.

.

another misconception on the deference we give to our head of state and representative of our combined nations. along with the class thing. you will be having all Englishmen wearing Bowler hats and carrying umbrellas next.

Its up to the canadians if they want to be a republic no one is stopping them except themselves.

Not sure to be honest. Like kai pointed out there were "riots" in Kelivingrove Park during the royal wedding. Though by riot I mean there was a large illegal street party and violence erupted among all the drunks. Was nothing like what has been happening in England.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
This is hilarious - people from two nations with the same monarchy arguing about class warfare!

This coon ***/Texan will just sit back, cross my cowboy boots, and sip on a Lone Star beer while watching from my vantage point of one of the least "class conscious" places on earth.

Pass me that soft taco, will ya, Pedro?

Carry on!

When Princess Anne popped by Wampus' work an army of knobheads was sent round first to explain the proper way to dress and behave. She said something ignorant to him and when he politely disagreed with her it seemed to be an epic scandal to her entire party. You can't tell me the nobility doesn't generally expect and usually receive quite a bit of deference from others, at least face to face.

Canada is autonomous enough for most people, but I would be delighted to get the queen's face off our money.

Who is Wampus and what does it mean? and these knobheads were they Brits?
