I don't see the big deal here. Heterosexual is for people who are sexually attracted to the opposite sex and not attracted to the same sex. Non-heterosexual is just any other stance. If that's all Jay needs to know about then the poll is fine.

Perhaps they're the only ones who clearly identify with any of the poll choices.
I think the poll is pretty clear cut. Heterosexuals choose option A or C, while everybody else is B or D. I was curious to see how the voting of this thread in regards to RF members would compare to general population.

To the best of my knowledge heterosexual orientation is the norm for both men and women. I was curious to know (a) how many people of each gender would vote, and (b) what percentage of each self-identify with the norm. Despite all the drivel polluting the thread, I am (as previously noted) totally disinterested in individual disclosure.
Hum, nothing wrong with that at all... but that is exactly what I said I supposed you were doing, but with other words :p
That is clearly not true:
He simply wanted to know who was heterosexual and who was not
Sure, he probably wanted to know who was of some sexuality he formerly or still thinks of as unconventional, but ...
As a said above: baseless drivel.

Why label the thread "sexual orientation of forum members" if you ONLY want to know who doesn't fit into the norm? Non-heterosexual isn't an orientation. So this isn't very clear cut.

I don't see why you're being defensive over this. The poll is about sexual orientation and you only put ONE orientation as an option. Pretty pointless, no?

57 votes so far ... not too bad. I wonder what a good/representative number might be.

Representative? You'd want to base the denominator on the number of users who are actually active on the forums, which is information you might be able to get from the admins (it doesn't seem to be listed in the forum stats sidebar on the home page). That would give you an idea of response rates, which if they're too low, you can just stop there and say "this data is bad." Then you would need to account for response biases by knowing something about the demographics of the population you're surveying (probably sex and age, at a minimum). But I don't imagine you want to get that technical. :D

At any rate, I don't get what's not clear cut about the poll. If you're heterosexual, you would mark a heterosexual option. If you're not, you would mark a non-heterosexual option. Given the dizzying array of terms non-heterosexuals use to describe themselves, I don't blame Jay for not attempting to account for them. This way doesn't leave anyone out.

Do you think pan-sexuality and homosexuality are similar? Or even bisexuality? I don't see how lumping all people who aren't heterosexual together makes any sense. I won't harp on it but it makes absolutely no sense. The poll should be "Who is heterosexual", since that is the only group who is actually represented. A transgendered male would identify as heterosexual if he likes women, but it wouldn't be the "norm".

I wouldn't read too much into it, Aiden. He's just curious about the general picture of sexual orientation on this forum. It's like asking people if they are Jewish or gentile, theist or non-theist. The question doesn't capture all the details, just one generality. Just out of curiosity.

So, you think I'm trying to find out who is a left handed Scandinavian gentile. I don't give a damn if you're Scandinavian or not and anyone who suggests otherwise is full of bullpuckie (which is - take it from me - NOT kosher)!

When you use theist or non theist both groups have broad meanings. Theists and non-theists differ in views and pretty much everything. Same with non-heterosexuals. Heterosexuals all agree on the same thing, so I don't see how this gives anyone a general picture of sexual orientations on this board. We now know who's straight and who isn't.

When did I claim I wouldn't vote? I understood the intent but your comments led me to feel like I should say something.
