I think it's always worth remembering that the Islamic world kept science, philosophy and knowledge from the ancient world including Greeks and Romans alive at a time when western europe was descending into the barbarity of the Dark Ages. Indeed I'm no expert but wasn't a lot of it housed in a library in Alexandra at a time when Christian Europe was burning books?

This is totally true. But what bearing does it have on the modern world? It is history, it is the present that is important not the past.

Without the Renaissance, where do you think the West would be today? I think the past is very important to the present.

well, I said that in KSA, women can't drive..(BTW, KSA has it's own good reasons for that)

But are you sure you have been into any other Eastern country?...and you thought there are no rights to women?

I can simply doubt...I even have female american and germal friends living here in Cairo, and we were all working together in a common workshop..
They never said such a word, and they were always free to do whatever they wanted with no disturbance from anybody..

That was the impression I got when I went to Egypt. From my personal experiences of Eastern culture woman were not equal to men and I do not feel they were treated fairly.

Back to the topic at hand.
I feel non-violent porn is not dangerous to children if they are actively seeking it. The fact they are seeking it shows they have reached an age of certain sexual maturity when they will start having sexual thoughts. Porn would act as a realise to these impulses in children.

I think the bearing it has is that it sets the frame for the modern day middle east, it is an area with a rich, deep culture and history, certainly there are problems in the region but there are also problems in Europe and America and I think it is no less sophicticated than anywhere else, arguably more so.
Perhaps I took your post up wrong but I thought you were saying you viewed the region as being in the 'dark ages'.

They might be having sexual thoughts but then they want to experiment. Children as young as eight are having sex these days.

Has anyone found any studies specifically to do with effects of pron on children? I have been looking through the British Psychology Society website but am having trouble identifying a paper wholly on the subject.

I didn't find any direct studies..
And what I provided earlier is a sort of articles, not studies

I will keep looking anyway

The Christian East was keeping those things alive, too. And by the time the Christian East fell before Muslim conquerors, the Christian West had rediscovered them.

Never by Muslims. The great Library at Alexandria was destroyed no later than the Muslim conquest, and possibly before that.

Nice fabrication.
Tell that to the European women who have been raped by Muslim immigrants who said they deserved it because of their immodest dress. Tell it to the hundreds of Muslim women murdered every year in honor killings. Fabricated to death, are they?

Let's stick to the OP today! Please feel free to start a new thread on values if you want to discuss that, but in this thread, let's discuss whether porn should be banned to protect children.

Porn isn't worth it. To an immature kid, it can spark of all sorts of feelings and wants. It can lead to diseases. Children need to know that porn is not for them. (WE?) need to know that porn is for above 22ish.

Sunstone has mentioned for you lot to stop arguing about Islam about a million times, i suggest you listen and show a little respect. Look at the little "Should Pornography Be Banned To Protect Children?" It doesent say "Islam Moral Debate" now does it? Read it and have a little respect for a forum elder.

What diseases does porn lead to? How can looking at something give you a disease? Why is it only for people above 22 when I can have sex at 16? What justification do you have for this, ie is there any data to support your theory's?

Data? I don't know. Sorry, but this is my opinion. Porn gives IDEAS. Ideas lead to action. STD, sexually transmitted diseases. Well, not ALL 16 year olds are clever, you live in Scotland, you should know of Liverpool, London, Manchester, most parts of the wrold don't even get education, they see porn they do it. They have no clue what they do. MKaybe not 22, but like 19-20. Thats the age when maturity peaks, for me i reckon.

I live outside Dundee, which has the highest % of teen births in the UK. Porn is often used a realise of sexual tension so it might even stop people having sex when they aren't quite ready.

I just realized that I voted "some kinds" should be banned but I was thinking of the kinds of pornography that is already illegal... hmm. Nevermind I guess! I also think this is a parental-responsibility issue. I just wish it was harder to run into really sick, illegal, violent porn on the internet by accident... they need to crack down on that. Other than that, porn is porn, I agree if it's banned it will still exist regardless.
