Software Feedback Thread

This is another bit of backstage trouble: the first time the email verification stopped working, the admins contacted the owners because we knew that the lack of new registrations was a major issue for a forum like this. The owners attempted to fix it within the confines of the old software, but it didn't even last a full week before breaking again because the software had no reliable spambot control in place.

For months after, I would sometimes browse the list of new registrations in the admin CP to manually validate accounts. Of course, I needed to check the IPs against spam blacklists in case they were spam IPs. So in order to come out with two or three legitimate new members, I usually had to go through 20-30 spambots.

If the forum could have somehow survived the issues with the old software for a few more months, the long-term deterioration would have absolutely killed the forum anyway.
Yes, I think it was all downhill after the email system went down. It was obnoxious for the members, frustrating for the mods, and even worse for the admins...

Does anyone know if reactions other than "likes" get tallied in our stats?

Outa here... bye-bye!
I don't see any 'New Threads' list. I look, I look, everything is confusing as hell.

That's what I used most, wanted it EXPANDED not eliminated! New posts? TOTALLY USELESS!

I click on 'What's New' is there any new threads? NO! But 'Latest profile posts' are there.
You think I give an excrement about 'Latest profile posts'??? WTF??? Where are LATEST THREADS???

I see no way to IGNORE A FORUM, like I'd LOVE to do with the political forums. Just BLOCK THEM. Nope.

The site is almost unusable now. My posts are now down to zero. I probably won't stay. I don't have time for this....

Interesting...still getting used to it, although it seems easy to use...

Concern: I've long relied on the "New Threads" block that was on the right-hand side...I don't see an option under the filters or elsewhere (and maybe I just haven't found it yet) to show just the newest threads, so I can see what's new to the board...
Ya, it's gone it seems. Personally, I'm not staying here without it.

They do. You can see in the Reactions Received section in your profile. There's the total number of reactions and then there are columns for the particular types of reactions.

Not sure if this is the same with anyone else, but my 'reactions received' is 98 higher than my 'reaction score.'

Please don't leave... they're working on it.

The "New Posts" option does work pretty well. I agree that the New Threads panel was much much better. But, if you go to "New Posts" and scroll through it, advance a few pages, you'll be able to see any new threads created.

For example, today scrolling through the New Posts 5 pages gets you through any unread threads created in the past 48ish hours. Yes, it's more cumbersome, but, in some ways it's better because you're not limited to the 10 ( I think ) newest threads.

I'm confident they'll get the new threads panel back.

Well, that seems to have fixed it. Wait a minute, now it's different. With Preview in R-hand top corner bold, I can enter new stuff (as I am now). But I can't select. Click the text and it goes off ... and I can select and copy but not type more or position the cursor to paste. Click the text and it goes off ... That last bit was from the copy I did, now I can paste it but not select.
Test.

Now it's working. I don't know if anyone did anything, but thanks anyway.

Also a general "thank you" to everyone who is working on getting the new software going. It's a thankless task, I know.

I'll note a couple of other things that were a problem and are now fixed. Maybe others can add to the list and show appreciation to those that made it happen.

The name of the person in a quote box is now clearly visible.

So is the current page number at the bottom and top of the page. (That's where there is a list of page numbers). I hadn't seen it listed as a problem by anyone and I didn't want to add to the list of petty problems, but it was difficult to see.

I didn't notice that. I've got something similar - a difference of 34.

The new software assigns a "positive," "neutral," or "negative" score to each rating. The "negative" category is disabled, so the difference between the number of total reactions received and the reaction score is due to the "neutral" category.

The "wow," "sad," and "angry" reactions are designated as neutral. The rest are positive.

I'm adapting...and now that they are aware of the concern, waiting for a fix. Maybe it won't happen, but I think in time it will be resolved.

Bringing back the "New Threads" list is a priority, and the owners are aware of it. The admins have expressed to the owners that we and multiple other members would like to have it back as soon as possible too.

That reminds me of a (unnamed per rules) former forum of mine.
It had negative ratings. The net result was that everyone gave
negative ratings to posters they disliked. The only posters
with a positive rating were newbies who hadn't offended
anyone...yet. That never lasted. Everyone fell.

So I eagerly await being able to continue that horror here.
My frubal finger itches to spread venom throughout RF.
Yeah, I'll endure it too, but that's how it goes in war.

Disclaimer:
A wee bit'o mirth in that last paragraph....or is it?

Not for me.

I've not noticed anything on my list getting fixed yet.

I'm also used to user-friendly lists of "we've fixed this and that" and a "need to be fixed" list in other places. My perception is that RF is not a high priority to the "owners" and communication with those of us who use the site even lower. (I'm not counting the mods here because they're stuck with "PhD (piled higher and deeper)".

The owners own multiple fora, and these fixes are not always simple, five minute jobs. One is also figuring out how to work with the new software, then the staff must figure it out, maybe adapt it to suit the forum, then roll it out.

Patience is valued rn.

That does not excuse the lack of communication outside of the platitude about being patient.
