In all seriousness, I really don't like issuing infractions, especially when the action will suspend a member's forum participation. I would much rather people just kept their egos in check and followed the rules.

Same here. I have seen a lot of members over the years who clearly love participating and value the community but sometimes have genuine trouble sticking to the rules. Those are usually the hardest for me to moderate.

We knew the update was inevitable, but we didn't know exactly when it would happen. When the site went down for the update, a couple of us actually had no idea whether that was planned for the update or accidental.
I seem to remember you (or another admin) crating a thread in January (i think) on a possible update. I can't find it now to check what was written though I'm pretty sure some people protesting about no advanced warning made comment on the thread.

Of course I may be wrong and it was just a premonition but I don't believe in that at all.

You say that a couple had no idea.
Did anyone know the schedule & nature of the change?

Knowing it was inevitable, even a minimal warning of
what little was known would've helped some here.
It gives an illusion of control.
And I suspect that some would see it as a sign of respect.
Of course, that's a difficult thing to do so that people
notice & remember it. I have the same issue with
notices that I put in leases, eg, Megan's Law, possible
code changes, force majeure (pardon my French).

As for me....I needed no notice.
Couldn't have acted upon it anyway, so I'm all meh.....
As long as I can keep on posting, I'm good...good enuf.

Wouldn't the thread itself be an advance warning..?

The schedule? Not in any exact detail: only that it had been in planning for months. We had no idea when it would actually be deployed.

As for the nature of the change, we just knew that it would be a big update, but we didn't know the exact extent of the changes either.

You can see this right now when observing how we (staff members) are adjusting to the changes and reporting issues or desired features like everyone else. If we had known the details beforehand, we wouldn't have needed to do this.

We did mention the update's necessity before:

We would have posted more details if we had known any.

I still can't highlight parts of the text in order to delete/copy/bold etc. It a pain when trying to format a response.

What I mean by "highlight" is to hold the left mouse button and run the mouse over the text, which then has a blue background added. I just tried it on the post above, and it works. See ... Could you link the post here? I just copied and pasted that sentence. It doesn't work in the reply section. Btw, when it was highlighted it gave me a choice to reply to it. Is that a new feature?

FWIW, I've no problem with how staff handled it.

No, this has always been a feature. I can't say I'm having issues with this. Could you explain it another way?

Any advice on how to divide up a quoted response
so that I respond to each portion serially?

I've tried & failed. So I've resorted to annoying
others by making a separate post for each response
to portions of their posts.
On the plus side, my post count soars!

Just quote the response, then type in the quote box. I clicked after '?' on your post and it auto divided the quotes.

I've managed that. Select each bit of text in turn and press the +Quote button. Then on the edit box press the inset quotes button.

The correct term seems to be "select". Here's an explanation I found. I selected and copied it on the other site and pasted it here with Ctrl/V. I can't select any of it here in the reply area. Added: I can select text now that it is posted, but once I edit it I can't do it again.

How to select text in Windows by clicking or tapping

Highlighting text in Windows by clicking or tapping works pretty much the same way as selecting multiple items. Click or tap once, and hold to start your selection. Then, drag your cursor or finger and notice how the characters on your screen are highlighted. Release when you are done selecting your text.

Clicking and holding while dragging the cursor selects text

Aye, just giving advance warning of some inevitable
change can soothe the savage tenant, poster, client,
customer, voter, etc.
I wonder who knew what when? Perhaps staff had
advance knowledge of the change. But they would've
avoided enduring some barking & biting if things had
been more transparent.

Other than the admins, staff didn't have any more notice than the rest of the members did.

You guys should'a led with that complaint.
Better to be seen as fellow victims than imperious minions of The Man.

Anyway, it works better than the old XenForo.
And my newfound facility with this version will
serve me well on another forum that's been using
it for a couple years now.
Woohoo!

We are The Man. :D

We're the Sif, the owners are the Force itself.

Woohoo!

I'm just overjoyed to be moving forward.

I don't think most of the members realize just how fast the old ship was sinking.

From our perspective, the people complaining about the update are like shipwreck survivors complaining because the daiquiris being served on the rescue ship don't come with the right color umbrellas.
