Money is replaceable and insurable. Life is always worth more than things, imho.
Robbers are bad people, but they generally just want your things. I say give it to them if they've got a gun to your head because replaceable things aren't worth risking your life over.
We value life & money differently.
Some people don't deserve to live.
But money is always useful.

Apparently we do. I think life trumps money, always.
I don't think robbers deserve to die. Child rapists\murderers, maybe.
Sure, money is useful. But if you've lost your life, money is pretty useless to you.

Whose life is worth more?
Who gets to decide?
If someone has a gun pointed at you are you going to tell me thier life is more important than you defending yourself?
Like I said, if someone points a gun at my head, I'll give him the stuff he wants My life isn't worth risking over replaceable stuff. I'm not replaceable.

Facepalm! Because letting them shoot you is less risky?
You are risking your life by not defending yourself.
Who said anything about letting anybody shoot me.
A robber wants my stuff. If he puts a gun to my head and demands I give him my stuff, I'm inclined to do so, because my life is worth more than replaceable stuff.

If a robber loses his life while trying to rob me,
then this is good cuz I get to keep my money,
& there's one less thug robbing people. Money
is no longer useful to him, but who cares, eh.

I'm getting repetitive.

If someone puts a gun to your head, you are already likely dead. You can't assume that if you give a mouse a cookie he's going to leave happy. If he's high or just crazy he will very likely blow your brains out anyway.

Apparently, not.

I've been robbed at knifepoint. I gave the guy my wallet and he ran off. I wasn't about to risk my own life for a wallet.

Not all robberies proceed to a point where a gun is pointed
at one's head. But even if that happens, it also matters how
far away the gun is. Perhaps ducking behind cover would
be useful. The appropriateness of self defense, including
use of guns, very much depends upon individual circumstances.
The OP's example is one successful case.

Legally, if the gun is aimed at you, it's a viable threat and shooting the perpetrator is justified. ...
Assuming
  • The threat is IMMEDIATE (happening NOW)
  • OTHERWISE UNAVOIDABLE (you didn’t do ANYTHING to start the conflict or perpetuate it)
  • A CREDIBLE THREAT
  • OF SERIOUS BODILY HARM (aka ‘crippling injury’)
  • OR DEATH
  • TO YOU OR ANOTHER INNOCENT PERSON…
Even if it's a knife, if the other factors are the same and he's within 20 feet, you are likely justified.
But obviously only the person being threatened can make these judgements and it's not like you normally have much time to think about it.

My daughter had that experience when in college in Philly, she waitressed for spending money and one night after getting off work and walking through the parking lot a guy jumped out at her with a knife and demanded she hand over her 'bag', meaning her purse. She asked him which one sense she was holding a small brown paper bag, he pointed to the purse which he picked up and ran off with. The small paper bag contained her tips for the night, no money in the purse. But a hassle to replace other things.

I assume that you mean "the defendant is justified"
to shoot the perpetrator.

I'm glad your daughter is okay and thought quickly on her feet. Also, that the robber didn't really get what he wanted.

It's a big hassle to replace items from one's person, believe me, I know. But it's less of a hassle than my family having to plan my funeral.

Their life is more important than the hassle of the insurance claim for whatever they steal.

The life of any innocent bystander who might get caught in the crossfire is more important than the hassle of the insurance claim.

The shopkeeper's own life - which would be very much at risk if they decide to start a gun battle - is more important than the hassle of the insurance claim.

Your point of view isn't even self-centered; it's just reckless. Do you really think that when a bad guy - who you say is ready to murder you - already has a gun pointed at you, things are likely to go well for you if you reach for your gun?

Give this scenario more than half a second of thought.
