Teens: Questions about sex? Get them answered.

I'm not remembering the condom + dildo class. I wonder if they split up the boys and girls for that. That doesn't make any sense though. Everybody needs to know. Maybe I just skipped that class. That happened a lot. :p

So, you were under the influence of not being there for it. I used that homework excuse a few times :p

It wasn't until I discovered the interwebs that I found out that people didn't get taught this kind of stuff, and it actually rather startled me. I suddenly realised that there were actually people at 16 years old, who didn't know how to use a condom! Combine that with.. well.. your average 16 year old, perhaps a drink or two, and you've a recipe for herpes central. Seemed ironic that the ones on the internet who hadn't been taught this stuff, went to a school that was just as religious-based as the one I went too, talking about the same values such as truth and honesty.

To be honest, sex ed. seems a silly thing to be getting worked up about. Hey - at least they don't give you any homework...

Yeah, it startles me too. That's my whole motive for this thread. Kids need access to accurate information about condoms. Especially with syphilis making a comeback.

It's not sex ed. that abstinence "education" lobbyists are worried about - it's sex outside of marriage. Their motive is social control, not education.

On a few different threads I've been noticing the effects of "Abstinence Education" are really starting to show.

Anyway, AmazingLoser quite rightly expressed his frustration with the fact his questions about sex weren't answered in his school's sex ed program. It got me browsing around to see if there might be a one-stop-shop for accurate information about sex for teens, and lo and behold, I found one.

Sex, Etc. -- Sex Education by Teens, for Teens

I hope the younger members of the forum might find this useful, especially those who were subjected to religious "Abstinence Education" programs, which are notorious for spreading misinformation and fear-mongering.

Well, I read through that site. Well, skimmed really. And there's nothing on there that I didn't already know, so....

Holy smokes, check this out:
CONDOMS PROVIDE PROTECTION FROM STDS?!? They specifically told me otherwise... =O

You still have a one in six chance of contracting an STD, even with a condom.

Well, that's according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services
(July 20, 2001) - which claims that the infection rate with a condom is only reduced by about fifteen percent.

Is this wrong in any way? I've seen similar stats pretty much everywhere.

High school sex ed was great, man, just great.

Call me sometime, bye! :D
I see.

I went to school in TX, and our sex ed consisted of "condoms don't work."

Interesting. I guess it just shocks me that such things are being taught. Maybe it's not as common in CA?

The point is that whatever they told you can not be trusted, and it would be worth your time to independently verify all of their factual claims.

Did they DEFINITELY lie to you? I don't know, but if they didn't, it's down to your teacher, not characteristic of Abstinence Programs.
I guess. I didn't really see the class as important because, well, sex isn't all that difficult a topic.

Edit: on further consideration, it occurred to me that you're the guy who thought a man's sex drive is 100 times more powerful than a woman's, and that men can't control themselves so women who spend time alone with them are partly responsible for being raped. So, yes, they certainly did lie to you. Even if you didn't get that preposterous idea from class, they obviously failed to give you a meaningful education about human sexuality. If "all the kids you've met" think their sex ed program was informative, it only means the kids you've been talking to are just as misinformed as you, so they don't see the problem either.
I learned that from somewhere else, not from school. And the point of the class was not to discuss everything about sex. Just the basics. How it works. What can happen as a result. How to prevent those results properly. It wasn't an all out study on sex. So the affects of the sex drive on a person's psychology wouldn't have been included.

Yeah, it startles me too.

From what I've heard on the internet, it's a much bigger problem than people make it out to be. I, personally, think that part of the problem is that sex is still somewhat a taboo.

People are too uncomfortable with talking about sex. If more people are open about talking about it, then educating people becomes easier.

As was said in a previous post, it's because not everyone uses them properly.

Also, if you're doing a survey...
"Have you ever had an STD?"
-Yes
"Have you used a condom every time?"
- ... ..yes..

For some reason people do that, beats me as to why.. xD

Our high school was pretty good about sex education, I can't really think of anything they missed out (to do with health and safety that is).
The main problem I have with sex education is the tendency to brand sex as "wrong". As long as people know the risks I think it should be up to them, while teens are going through puberty they simply don't need the added stress of being told that their feelings are wrong or "dirty".
Perhaps it's a little extreme (how else would you want me to be?) but I also think teens should be taught more about sex as a source of pleasure rather than just as a means of reproduction. Nowhere does sex education teach about fetishism for example and considering puberty is a time when people are highly likely to experiment and highly unlikely to do their own research, I think it would be worth teaching about safety during SM sex or anal sex or a variety of other things I should probably just shut up right away about.

My high school was mixed on sex ed. The kids who were college bound were required to take a biology course that offered an fairly good sex education. The kids who were not college bound were not required to take the course and got no sex education if they did not take it anyway.

I would say that social control is the main motive of the govt. educational system in general.

We never got to do that either. In fact... I don't think I've ever even touched a condom... I'm sure if I needed to, I could figure it out though... if the guy couldn't figure it out first... You just put it on there... It doesn't seem too difficult.

Make sure you read the instructions. It's not rocket science, but if you want the "97 % effectiveness against pregnancy", you need to follow them to the letter.

I can sort of see where you're coming from, but up here it's not so bad. They genuinely do try to "educate" kids at school in Canada. We don't have a goggle-eyed horde of religious fundamentalists trying to muscle into secular classrooms to use them as a pulpit. (Well, I'm sure we do, but they don't get very far).

..... I was taught abstinence only sex education.... but I still knew better than that because my parents talked to me. The problem isn't due to what the schools teach, it's what the parents DONT teach....

Anyway, luckily I don't have any questions about sex... and I suppose that I'm not a teen so it doesn't apply to me.... unless anyone knows a position that would get me off every time. ;) Can't seem to find that sweet spot.

Try masturbating a lot and feel around for it. The FAQ advises that you masturbate regularly in order for you and your partner to know what your sexual needs and turn-ons are.
