"Gunmen have attacked the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 people and injuring seven, French officials say.

At least two masked attackers opened fire with assault rifles in the office and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car.

Regardless of the motives a horrific crime. Our prayers, good thoughts and condolences go out to the victims and families involved.

The gunmen as of now are still on the loose, let's hope they are stopped and cannot harm anyone else.

Therefore, by example, those that respect and believe the Quran when it says that Mohammed's life was exemplary, will try to act in this way. By the sword.

I'd rather not see any. But it's not a matter I can control in any way. I'm only speculating about the possibility that Islam might move past inspiring such attacks. In the meantime, we certainly need measures prevent them.

Religious reform usually happens over generations of liberation and education. Unfortunately, with Islam, the trend is headed the other direction, with less liberation and less education. What Muslims are being taught is warped and violent.

A terrible tragedy, but one that will backfire on the perpetrators to a large extent. Yes, the media there and elsewhere will have to weigh the risks of even using satire in this arena, but there's going to be a backlash, not only in France but elsewhere, against these elements. There's a strong anti-immigration mood already there, and this will even make it even stronger yet. Dumb people do dumb things that often backfire on them.

I missed one of the London 7/7 tube bombings by 24 hours, so yeah, it's a question I've pondered. Co-incidentally I missed an IRA pub bombing in Birmingham by 24 hours back in the 1970s. I'm not condoning what the IRA did, but at least they had a political agenda. But what the hell are these Islamics trying to achieve? Their agenda seems to be terror for the sake of terror, a vengeful lashing out at anything different.
