My favorite American beer is Ommegang our of New York.

My favorite import is a tie between Unibroue 10 and Chimay Grand Reserve.

But I'll drink an Old Milwaukee too.

Beer is the best, that wine carry on doesn't even come close.

Every pub where I live sells real ale - i.e. beer that is still alive - and we have five micros within easy distance, so I am a happy man engaged in lifelong learning. Real ale is the stuff - a huge range of tastes, and the chance for the brewer to show creative skill and the cellarman (or possibly cellarwoman, though I've never met one) to demonstrate craftsmanship. CAMRA is the best thing that has ever happened over here (that's the Campaign for Real Ale to the unenlightened), and a relief for us grown-ups amongst the puking binge drinkers. It also supports real cider, though all I ever got from that is a two-day hangover. There's no accounting for taste!

Beer is wonderful stuff! My general preference is local microbrews, though my special favorites change constantly.
I've never had a microbrew I didn't like, but I don't drink them very often, either. Most of the time I drink bottled beer. (I know microbrews are often bottled; you know what I mean.)

Right, I know. I usually drink bottled micros, but the best beers I've ever had have been in brewpubs.

21!!! Those drinking laws in America.
My grandad bought me my first pint when I was fourteen or fifteen.
My dad said when he was just a little kid my grandfather would hand him a pitcher and tell him to go to the tavern and bring back some beer. Of course, my grandfather was Irish. :D

My great-great-grandfather died after falling in a vat at the Guinness distilleries in Dublin way back when he worked there. It was a slow, horrible death. He got out three times to use the bathroom.

It's 19 here. 18 in Alberta and Quebec.

I remember one trip when I was in university: we were heading down to the US for a few days. I was 21 and the rest of my friends were 20, so I was appointed to buy the beer. I went to the shop, brought my beer to the counter, and the cashier asked for ID. I gave her my driver's license, which had a picture of me from age 16 (short hair, glasses, clean-shaven). She looked at me in front of her (college-aged, ponytail, no glasses, scruffy goatee).

"That's not you."

"Yeah, it is. It's just an old picture."

"Well, do you have any other ID?"

"I've got my university student card. It's got my photo on it."

"No, government ID."

"No, that's it."

"Then I can't sell you the beer."

We were way out in the country, so the next-nearest store with beer was at least half an hour away - too late to get to before it closed, anyhow.

It ended up being a dry trip. :(

What does beer actually taste like? Can you describe it? I ask because every beer I have ever tasted has been pretty awful and so it's something i would never spend my money on. Yet most people seem to like it, so can you describe what you are tasting? I know I have weird taste buds....heck, I think I'm the only person in the world that hates any kind of pizza, but I didn't choose my taste buds. If you guys tasted beer the way I tasted it, I guarantee you'd never touch the stuff.

Although I would never do it, if I were to send my 6 year old to the store to get me a pack of smokes (if I smoked) a bottle of whiskey and a six pack of beer they would give it to her no questions asked, welcome to Thailand drinking 18 but who cares no one has a drivers license anyway.

It all depends on what you're drinking. Beer is a very diverse beverage. Some of the lighter beers have strong citrus flavors while dark beers like stouts and porters tend to have flavors of chocolate and coffee. Belgian beers (the best of the best) usually have very bold fruit flavors and some breadiness from the yeast. I'm not sure what you've been drinking, but if it's the cheap American stuff then you're getting a very poor representation of how complex and enjoyable beer can be.

My personal favorites are Arrogant B*****d (Stone), La Fin du Monde (Unibroue), and Rogue Chocolate Stout, to name a few. I have to say though, nothing beats a Belgian quad.

I've found my new shangri-la of beer........Erdinger Weissebrau.

It's a German unfiltered wheat beer - and quite possibly the most delicious darn thing I've had in a while.
