The Biden Question

Wirey

Take a look at Axios: Behind the Curtain: Democratic rage at Biden rises

There are plenty of other articles like it, including those to be found in the New York Times and the Washington Post, but Axios is Paywall free.

Biden could do something heroic. I fear that he won't.
Unfortunately, most of what I have read indicates that Biden is a proud guy, and I think he'll talk himself into believing he can win. Stephen King said "We lie most effectively when we lie to ourselves", and I think that's what will happen. Biden should step down, but the people around him aren't going to tell him that.

One of the many unfortunate traits that he shares with Trump.

When it comes to replacing Biden, IMO the dems are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

They are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
If Trump wins they will regret not replacing him.
If Trump wins they will regret replacing him (if they do).

The longer they have their doubts about Biden, the worse it looks on the party as a whole. They need to push the ball one way or the other, either stand behind him and support him or try to replace him.

As the election nears, time is ticking down quickly on making decisions. It may be too late already to go with an alternative, so their best bet might be to stick with Biden and if he wins have him bow out gracefully.

Blaming it on a cold is just an excuse to ignore reality. He has had too many episodes similar to the debate to blame it on a cold. To deny that is no different that the right denying Trump covered up payments to Stormy.

It saddens me that Trump and Biden are the best this country has to offer.

Agreed, Biden is stubborn in a persistence sense, Trump is just transactional in that any path to his personal goal (self-aggrandizement) is good.
I don't particularly disagree. But I would still wish they were more different.

I'd rather live with a fascist then a marxist or communist if I had no choice in the matter.

Eh. That is quite weird, but you do you.

Unfortunately, Fascism is all about stealing people of choice, so there is that.

Although granted, if i did have a choice, it would be neither.

Great for you. You put him in your guest room then.

Many other people are not looking forward to being stolen the choice, you know.

If the poor debate performance was just a 'one off' like so many around him are claiming, then Friday or even Monday morning he should had an unscripted press conference. Stand there for an hour taking questions.

But no, he only did a few short events with a teleprompter. Not good.

Don't bank on the fella to ever be able to undergo any type of conference without someone else telling him what to say, and pre scripting out questions and giving coached answers with the aid of a teleprompter.

I fear that is true. And I have heard some around him have said things like 'he has good days and bad days.' I mean comon, that is something you say after visiting a loved one in memory care. Not trying to be mean, just stating the obvious.

Can you paint a scenario in which, if Biden stood down, the Democrats could find, nominate and successfully sell another candidate in the 4 months left before the election?

Granted, the party has a process in place for how it could be done (finding a replacement). Under the existing rule, Democratic National Committee Chair Jamie Harrison would name a new nominee, in consultation with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Democratic Governors Association Chair Tim Walz of Minnesota. Their choice would be presented to DNC members — a group of party leaders much smaller and more elite than the delegates to the convention — for ratification or rejection.

And this group of elites would present their nominee to the committed delegates Biden has already won, and naturally they will all think, "Oh, how clever of our overlords -- how could we have been so stupid?" (Out of interest, Biden has won nearly 4,000 delegates, Trump 2,265.)

And then there's selling this new person -- with no record to run on -- as being so much better than Trump, who has at least served a term in the White House.

In my view, Biden's resignation would hand the election to the fascist. In a landslide.

I lke what the Washington Post has reproduced of Nanci Pelosi's comments.

This seems to be the video.

I can't get to the Washington Post article, but I just listened to Nancy Pelosi.

My reaction? It's all summed up in one sentence. "We have to stop [Trump}". There's nothing more important if you care about the future of the USA. So I would vote for the proverbial yellow dog if it could beat Trump.

The next question is, who, or even what strategy, is best to achieve that end? Unfortunately, these things don't depend on sober reflection by intelligent people. It's a matter of perception, and Biden just dealt a huge blow to that. Can he recover? Is another candidate a better choice? Who would that be? Is it possible to get him or her on the ticket? I don't envy those that have to make these decisions.

My personal advice to them, which they will never hear, is don't dump Churchill after Dunkirk. Instead, get behind him and push harder. He may lose but it won't be for want of trying and in any case he's 100% better than the alternative.

One last thought. Job #1 is to get past this crisis. I'd suggest an independent and unbiased professional evaluation of Biden's mental state. If he passes, use it to promote him. If he fails, replace him. Either way, then challenge Trump to do the same (he'll refuse and that can be used against him).

Something those on the "resign" side should consider: No President runs the country by themselves, nor do they make decisions in a vacuum. They have advisors and Secretaries, all of whom have hundreds of supporters. The President, more often than not, merely chooses what he thinks are the best offerings of this large team.

Now, it is clear that Biden has surrounded himself with a very competent team -- his record in office shows that (only for those who will actually look at the record, instead of what Fox says it is). What did we see of those Trump surrounded himself with, especially in his last days (but even in the early days, when he was appointing and unappointing people at warp speed)? And who do we think he will surround himself with if he wins? Clever, independent thinkers, or toady's who will swear to do his bidding?

Biden should not resign.

The odd thing is that both men have videos of having mental issues, but it only applies to Biden. From what I’ve seen Trump has more mind faltering videos but it means nothing. This all comes down to swing voters and who knows what they are looking for.
