They aren't socialist though (ie, the people own the means of production).
N Korea & Cuba would be appropriate therapy.
But the results might not be what you want.
Europeans invented the word socialism...but Americans are entitled to define it.

It's like I said: I am entitled to define what America is, you aren't. ;)

Wrongo pongo....at least if you use English dictionaries.

OK, I'm now on board with using personal definitions.
You're Ethiopian now.
(I re-defined "Italian" to mean a person from New Jersey.)

Socialism: it's an ensemble of ideologies, movements and doctrines linked to left-wing political positions which tends to a transformation of the society aimed at reducing the inequalities among citizens in the social, economic and juridical field.

Our discussion is in English, not Italian.

I don't think anybody outside the US would think these countries represent socialism. The US is a weird place....

Words don't always translate directly.
The rough equivalent of the English "socialism"
in another language might not mean the same
thing. It's weird to think they should all be
the same in all languages.
Think of "gymnasium" in English vs German.
Unrelated meanings.

The point is that it doesn't even seem to mean the same thing in other English speaking countries. I don't think anybody here in the UK would think that North Korea or Cuba were socialist, as opposed to communist.

Socialism here is associated with maybe nationalising natural monopolies like power and water, maybe trains, but much more for standing up for workers' rights, more generous social security, supporting and properly funding the NHS, etc., and probably raising tax on the rich to do all those things. I can't see anybody thinking they want to turn us into North Korea.

I've been lamenting that. In USA, it's common for.
Conservatives: Oppose socialism, ie, government doing things for people.
Liberals: Criticize conservatives for getting the definition of socialism wrong, but using the same definition.

By definition, communism also does away with all privately owned property.

It appears that socialism to liberals is whatever they like.
And to conservatives, it's whatever they dislike.

That is an oddity of American expectations, not of the English language.

No language has primacy over other languages
regarding words that are similar. If using English,
use English definitions....just as other languages
use their definitions.
I'm all for it - but you (collective you) are not. At least have the decency to no longer call it English.
(Btw.: would that then be Ameristanish or Ameristaneese or Americanean?)

We would, but the Brits get so mad at us when we correct them for some reason. I have no idea why:D

It's not a matter of definitions.
In the US, kids get high school diploma just by going to the prom and practicing sport.
In most European countries, high schoolers need to study tens of subject thoroughly.
That's how they learn the difference between Communism and Socialism.
If they don't, no high school diploma. ;)

Though I do wish that standards would be raised a bit you are clearly wrong with you accusation. The standards will vary state by state, but most if not all do have clear goals set out for graduation.

You better tell Britannica that they are using the American definition:

"Socialism, social and economic doctrine that calls for public rather than private ownership or control of property and natural resources."

May I know the difference between Communism and Socialism, then?
Or do Americans believe is the exact same thing?

An Italian student can tell the difference.
