What was it?

Red Mole Quail Eggs with Mulberry-Carrot Relish​

Ingredients:​

For the Quail Eggs and Red Mole:

  • 12 quail eggs
  • 1/2 cup red mole paste
  • 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
For the Mulberry-Carrot Relish:

  • 1 cup fresh mulberries (or dried, rehydrated if necessary)
  • 1 cup finely grated carrots
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
  • 1 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Served with fresh corn bread.

Tastes much better than you'd expect.

The mole/relish flavors combining really made it.

As far as I know, no predators eat them. We've had coyotes dig them up from the yard only to kill them and leave the carcass sitting there...

I've only had one encounter with them and that was in a park near the Golden Gate bridge. I didn't try to eat it but I did take a photo, I'll have to see if I can find it.
