Today's orientation presentations, a couple of them slightly rubbed me the wrong way in how terms like "those people" were often used, and how "professed atheist" was used to describe a hypothetical atheist. It started to remind me of Shameless, when Fiona got that office job and mentioned she worked with normal functioning people, and I started to feel that way, that I was working with "normal functioning" people, but then I had a strong feeling that I'm probably not the only one covering up a past, a history, and my own "abnormal" functionings. At least I hope I'm not, because "normal" people are such a dreadful bore.

I've noticed that even in "progressive" places like NPR, the word atheist is
often prefixed with "professed", "self-described", or some other qualifier.
So....are religious folk given certificates which make their status unquestioned?
And atheists are in doubt about our claimed label?

Of course it's in doubt. You are all a bunch of depressed immoral hooligans going through life without all the plushy soft goodness of god. It's so bad to be an atheist that you can't take someone else's word on it, you have to hear it straight from their own mouth, and then tell the world the atheist did factually describe themselves as an atheist. Don't wanna risk wrongly accusing someone and getting them mixed in that awful mess of a religion.

Unfortunately discrimination and put downs do exist. I agree with your idea that you're not the only one. Many have secrets.

I was once advised to stay away from the bank's Charlotte headquarters (ie cover up my beliefs) because even though I believe in God I'm not a Christian and that was a corporate kiss of death. I'm spoiled these days living in California because much more is accepted here by most people.

I know I'm not the only non-Christian that works for the company. But, among the case managers I work with I think I might be. Even the assessment forms we use for medicaid/medicare imply religion and spirituality is something you have to have. My own personal religious views I planned to not discuss with clients, but I've heard others affirming the Christian faith of some clients. And although the company promotes diversity, it's probably the least diverse group I've ever worked with, as well the most mundane. A few of them remind me of the majority of honor student's at college. And that isn't a compliment but of a criticism, in the manner of George Carlin criticism the idea of an honor student as someone who is good at following directions and going with the flow. Some of my coworkers, I'm pretty sure they've never even tried pot, follow every law because it's the law, and have not once challenged or questioned authority (such as the one case manager I shadowed under who got the world's mildest form of road rage at someone doing about 30 in a 25).

And Christ people need to learn how to ****ing use "reply" instead of "reply all." It's rather annoying to get 20 emails that are on par with spam as far as your day-to-day life and job go.

Woot! When I send an email, it's not just from me, it's from me, BGS. :D
Not the most prestigious of degrees, but for all my gripes I'm still really liking the job so far and feeling great and feeling like my efforts are finally paying off. It's also a great feeling that I've soared high above anyone in my dad's family as far as status goes (/thankful that I'm not damned to being a drug abusing welfare leeches like almost everyone in his family), and that SSI isn't even something I'm considering as an option anymore due to the harsh difficulties I've faced in gaining employment, especially employment that doesn't leave me feeling bitter and miserable ("deathly overqualified" isn't a phrase I'll be hearing to describe my holding this position).
