But I keep seeing news items about increasing surveillance of all kinds including demands that cellphones and encryption have back doors.

Wow. I'm kind of surprised to see Germany high on that list, given the deadly efficiency in surveillance the Nazis had going on.The uk used to be the most surveilled country in the world but now comes 5th (i think) overtaken by China, US, Germany, Japan
