The majority of the population would probably have very little risk in either situation. In both cases, the regular people just work, do their jobs, go home, and stay out of trouble. Anyone who goes around messing with any of Jojo Krako's or Okmyx's operations would be in a world of trouble, just like anyone who would mess around with the NK or Cuban government.
Does this mean you find the risks of oppression
to be the same here as in N Korea or China?

I see a huge difference between active surveillance
& mere data collection. The former is used to enforce
political & legal compliance.

Yes absolutely.

Do you imagine all companies are perfect guardians of our data who would never give the government surveillance data?
I never imagine perfection.
But I do believe that your cynicism & paranoia have
now exceeded even mine. This could be fun.

I would say that there would be a lowered risk of oppression proportional to people knowing the score. You don't play around with the mob, you don't draw pictures of Mohammad and post them in Mecca, you don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger, and you don't mess around with Jim.

You can call it "oppression" if you wish, and maybe it is oppression. But it's also life in the real world. It's pretty much the same for the little people, no matter where one goes. You do your job, you get a roof over your head, food, and the big shots will leave you alone. But if you step out of line and get unfavorable attention from the wrong people, then you can be in for a world of hurt.

It's interesting....I have a fundie friend who is convinced
that government agents follow him around to surveil &
mess with him. This is because he was politically active
in the 1980s....calling in to talk radio & speaking at city
council meetings. He says "those people never forget".

I have friends & family in/from China, Iran, Iraq, Poland,
& Russia. Their experience with oppression is very different
from what they experience here. (Life is better here.)

I've read that J. Edgar Hoover kept files on millions of Americans. I have no reason to believe that the practices of our government have significantly changed since his time.

I've known people from those areas of the world, and anecdotally, I've heard varied opinions and experiences. I've even been to the Soviet Union and saw things firsthand.

Every country has its dark side. One can find citizens or former citizens from any country who will claim that they were oppressed. I've known people who get parking tickets and claim they're living in a fascist society.

Ya know, you're exposing the conspiracy.
Do they surveil you too?

I see the dark sides as being different in nature & degree.
Perhaps you see Russia, N Kora, & China as no worse,
but that would be something to agree to disagree about.

Probably not much anymore. But there used to be this cat that would hang around. Haven't seen it much lately. I never trusted that cat. Could've been an informant.

Yeah, it always comes to this, doesn't it? We agree to disagree.

I'm fortunate.
Government isn't at all interested in me.

I read the news, real news, along with having lived through the "enemies list" and into the era of the last president's minions who would overthrow the legitimate government of the US. I've lived through times when companies secretly give data to the feds and see no essential difference between that and the state directly collecting such information. I know we have the "best government money can buy" and where the poor have higher property taxes than the rich (due to overassessment).

I consider myself not cynical but an experienced realist. It's not for me personally. You and I are products of a wealthy generation. Millennials are relatively much worse off.

And I'm no where as paranoid as I was during the late 60's when I talked to the wiretapper who I assumed was listening in to my phone calls due to my anti-war activism.

Such towns still must obey county, state, & federal law.
What evidence is there that these companies could
arrest, try, convict, & imprison people?
How many states and local municipalities actually follow federal law? Like, none of them can legally require religious faith to hold public office, but they do it anyways.
Elections are the reprieve of citizens from the state. Corporate boards are not voted on, generally have no input from anyone other than those running the company, effectively producing a one-party rule when it's applied to a town.

While every kind of governmental entity is capable of
violating federal law, the fed does regularly address this.
I wouldn't worry that companies would be worse than
the kind of busy bodies, bullies, & fanatics who inhabit
city councils. They all need watching & resisting.
