Its the idea they make money because we have to use their cards, that to get a place to live we have to routinely and regularly accumulate debt, which makes banks money.
And poker isn't something people have to do. Playing isn't something looked at or considered when we apply for an appartment or mortgage. And it shouldn't be. No one should have to play if they don't want.
But credit you have to have and use or your score goes down. That's bull****. That's a rigged system to systemically rake even more money to the banks.
And everything bad shows up. Even when you apply for an appartment. But not that much shows on it, and it doesn't stick around. Such as, you'd see I don't have **** for number of accounts and line of credit. You wouldn't see I've never missed a rent payment.
I begin to suspect that you don't like banks.
I like'm....the good ones.
BTW, you don't need a credit card to rent.
I take credit cards for self storage units,
but not for commercial or residential units.

You need a good credit score. That doesn't happen without regularly and routinely owing "certain" people money.
Certain because I routinely owe those like Geico or PG&E, but that doesn't show on credot scores.

More than a good credit score, you need verifiable
income, good tenant references, & a clean criminal
record. Lacking the first 2, you might qualify with
someone co-signing your lease.

In my town, the city is considering legislation making
it illegal to consider criminal record. There are big
legal & practical problems with this. In my experience,
landlords are sometimes held liable for crimes one's
tenants commit...we're supposed to surveil them &
prevent illegal activity.
Fortunately, I'm now completely outside the city limits.

In my mind, it is retarded to borrow money unless it's a something like an urgent need and emergency. It's even more dumb to borrow it when one has cash on hand for the expenses.
And it's made worse by the fact I watched my credit score drop. And then I needed to borrow to get my car running. Made a few payments, paid ot off several months ahead of time, and got a 100 point boost. Because I was in debt, because I owed someone money. I don't get a bonus for not frivolously going into debt. No, I was rewarded because I was in a situation where I had to make money for a bank.
It reminds me of religion, and doing things to appease god, even if it's not the best, brightest, smartest, or most moral and ethical thing to do. But just do it, appease the modern day economic clergy, and "invisible things" will smile upon you and bless you.

Why should I need a cosigner when the only bad thing in my credit report is I don't use it? I make my payments, make them on time, and that is what should matter. Not how often I go into debt and let a bank pay my bill at the register.

It's also very useful to borrow for investments...provided
one
fully understands the costs, benefits, & risks.

It sounds like the bank was useful to you.
But why not borrow from someone else....someone
who wouldn't make any profit off'n you?

You could always move to N Korea.
No oppression by capitalists there.

When a tenant lacks verifiable adequate income to
cover the rent & usual expenses, then the co-signer
guarantees payment.

If I'm complaining it reminds me of religion then NK would be a horrible place with them essentially having a pseudo-quasi-demigod ruling over them (seriously, no joke, no sarcasm, the Kims have a mythology around them that is a step above a Christian king's "divine right to rule" in term of theocratic nuttery).

What cheeses do you like?

Sigh. Due to gaining 5 pounds every time I look at cake, pie, cheese and so forth, liking has been set aside for a somewhat ascetic culinary lifestyle.

On rare occasions, I will indulge in non-runny mildly/moderately flavored cheese. Before COVID, and before Amazon ate Whole Foods, I used to snack at a cheese tasting display and found a lot to like.

Keeping people homeless is no way to attack recidivism.

Then Cuba?

Then lobby your politicians to not prosecute
landlords when criminals we rent to use drugs,
make drugs, vandalize the property, & invite
all their friends to over-occupy the unit with
frequent loud all-nite parties.

Question....
Would you want your daughter living in
an apartment next to a convicted rapist?
