It's one of those jokes.
Much like....

Bob walks into bar, & sees jar full of money on a table.
Bob: "What's the money for?"
Barkeep: "It's for the man who meets 3 challenges."
"First beat up the bouncer, Bubba. Then yank an
abscessed tooth from my vicious pitbull, Sunrise. Then
go upstairs to make sweet love to my aged mother."
Bob: "Piece of cake."
Bob immediately punches Bubba, knocking him out.
Then he heads outback to Sunrise's cage.
The crowd hears awful barking, & snarling...then barking
in abject terror...culminating in pained whining & yelping.
Bob returns, asking....
"Now, where's the old gal with the abscessed tooth?"

I think the dinosaurs told that one.

If they have a hard time finding working charging stations in Europe I don't have hopes it'll be feasible here.
And this electric car Hammond crashed? Damage to a battery cell started a chain reaction of shorts and cells catching on fire, and the car kept catching fore for 5 days. I was stunned when Hammond left Clarkson in a Lamborghini Aventador very far behind (but not sucking the exhaust because there was none). But everything else just seems rubbish about them amd in extreme need of improvement.

The kids have no problems finding changing points in France.

Most towns and villages have them in their car parks or streetside and just about every supermarket has free charge points.

Methinks Clarkson and co were trying to dis electric cars just on principal

May could find them, and he kept trying to justify it (Clarkson is obviously biased against them), but they didn't want to work for him (he was also antagonized by Clarkson who didn't give him enough time to get a full charge before they set out)

Time is the problem. The Ami only takes 3 hours for a full charge but that only gives 2 hours maximum driving time. A real car is going to take considerably longer.

For the vast majority of driving I do, 2 hours is more than enough. I can't think of the last time I drove any distance at all.

It will only do 45kph (28mph) two hours at that speed is not far. It takes them to school and back which is about 45 to 50 minutes each way. That's plenty.

I too rarely do more than an hour or two, but on occasion, maybe 3 or 4 times a year i will go outside that self imposed limit
