They also say people are leaving in droves and there is an exodus from here.
They say bacon will disappear from here.
They keep telling me my taxes have to be higher here than in Indiana.
And while I'm not living a dream, things have never been better for me.
Bacon will just see a supply shortage & price increase.
You will pay higher taxes than IN if you buy a home.

Oldest, the Engineer, like music I dislike and he is not a fan of anything I like, save one band....Queen. His first year in college he sent me a CD as a birthday gift, that he made, just for me....I hated everything on it, but never told him that.

My youngest, the classical musician who is interested in biological sciences, was having a conversation with a friend of hers today about music and they were discussing two songs, she really liked, and I like them too

However I am not to the level of the music appreciation conversation she as having, but then I'm not a classically trained musician

But then when youngest was 6, she use to ask me to play the blues CD (Muddy Waters and the like) The oldest preferred the radio and later his phone with earbuds and wanted the blues shut off

Long live the blues

This is people telling me my income taxes over the past three years I've filed here is higher than what it was in Indiana. I remembered the dread getting my first check here, because so many told me I would be crushed with taxes. But I found a rate far lower than what I had in Indiana. So much lower that I rarely didn't owe Indiana but the most I've owed California is $1.

You addressed "taxes", which would include property taxes.
CA is pretty high for all but homeowners who bought long ago.
(They're exempt from high increases, unlike new buyers.)

Home ownership: Been there, done that, not sure I want to do it again.

If you ever do, I'd recommend saving your money,
& waiting for the looming real estate crash. I can't
tell you when it will be, but the risk factors are strong.
I like the idea of someone else doing the lawn stuff, maintenance, and other time robbing stuff that comes with home ownership. Not to mention all the extra expenses that come with it.

You can avoid having to do or even contract for the work
with coop or condo ownership. But you'll pay for the service.
As a renter, you still pay for it. At least landlords can do it
at a lower cost than a homeowner could (if contracted out).

Yup. And it's all work I don't have to do, including finding someone to do it.

Some states have higher property taxes (especially based on valuation) and some have higher sales taxes and some have higher income taxes.

It's easy to complain about taxes. It takes more effort to think about the benefits especially if you suddenly need extra services.

You do indeed have some stiff competition from
some east coast states & cities.
Overall Tax Burden by State
Your mix of various taxes is pretty spendy.
But you get so much from the state, eh.
