The reasons why Islamic women wear the Veil

Looncall

Again there is a dress code for men and they should cover what should be covered.

And this is not the only reason why muslim women wear Hijab. It is also to protect them because women are precious. Besides it is purer for her heart so she won't get carried away behind her emotions and desires.

Allah doesn't only ask you to keep the commandments. He also gives you a way in doing so

Well, well ... Women as livestock and sexism in one post!

Lol.. Ok keep on taking words I write in separate and make them fit when you already think about Islam.

Every person has desires and feelings whether they were men or women.

You guys are really unbelievable.

This is part of the reason of why I don't to like doing such debates over the internet. Every time I write a sentence or a reply, you just delete what previously has been said.

Why do Catholic nuns wear what they wear ?

Because they're nuns. They have taken vows and joined a pious order of some description. They have chosen to dedicate their lives explicitly to their God.

How does a nun's habit relate to Mulism women? That's like saying all Muslim men should dress like an imam all the time that they're in public.

How did you relate the imam dress? Imam dress is only when he wants to lead the Salat or have a speeach and I am not aware that there is something called "imam dress and it is a must".

Anyways,,

The key answer here is "They have chosen to dedicate their lives explicitly to their God."

As a muslim we are also supposed to dedicate our life to God.

However a nun should keep it 24/7. She can't marry and she take it off only when she wants to sleep. Is that opression? No NO ..... it is not, sure it is not.

What about the muslim women who wants to put the Hijab only when she is around men strangers? Oppression !!! Oppression at its finest.

Remove the double standards and think things over.

I really find this offensive, so I'll ask you to clarify before getting angry.

Are you saying that without having my body covered up so men can't see it, I would be carried away by my emotions and desires?

Can you elaborate on that, please?

It is not personal and I am not saying that you are doing this.

People have desires and may get carried away.

Many women do get carried away. It starts by oh looks that guy is checking me out and the clothes begin going tighter and shorter everytime.

This may happen in varying degrees and may not happen also.

We are discussing the idea in general.

Because you're likening a profession (a nun) to everyday life of ordinary Mulism women.

So I'm likening a specific form of male dress (what imams wear) to everyday life of ordinary Muslim men. :)

The key answer here is "They have chosen to dedicate their lives explicitly to their God."

As a muslim we are also supposed to dedicate our life to God.

Keywords: "Chosen" and "supposed to".

However a nun should keep it 24/7. She can't marry and she take it off only when she wants to sleep. Is that opression? No NO ..... it is not, sure it is not.

What about the muslim women who wants to put the Hijab only when she is around men strangers? Oppression !!! Oppression at its finest.

I don't know about what nun's wear to bed. And a Muslim woman should be able to choose whether to wear the hijab.. but the question is about why she would do that.

And as long as those reasons are from sexist ideas such as "she'll get carried away with herself, and men won't be able to resist her", I'm going to fuss about it.

Remove the double standards and think things over.

You go first!! :)

Being a nun is something you go with all the time as well as Hijab. Being an Imam is not the same thing.

You can choose not to wear the Hijab. I am against forcing it to be put. I am discussing the idea of hijab not whether it must be enforced or not because I am totally against that.

The reasons I gave may not be the absolute reasons, am just stating what I find.

So if you like search for some scholars' opinions about the Hijab.

Or even try asking muslim women why they wear the Hijab when you see them.

I think everyone will give you a different answer

Maybe you should try asking them and seeing how many will tell you it's to keep their wayward emotions and unbridled lust for men in check.

(For the record, the ones I have asked in the past have generally said it makes them feel closer to Allah. Presumably they feel closer because they are doing what their told, and they're told to do that because it's to control their wayward emotions and unbridled lust for men, and to prevent men from devouring them like wolves. So.. I'm still not sold on the reasons. But I'll defend her choice to wear it.)

This is what God wants.

Every one should cover that part the fits the purpose of having them covered

Do you think if men's other body parts were exposed, (other than from the navel to the knee) women would be attracted to it.

It seems to me that the highlighted part sums up this whole issue: no matter what the reasoning given is, the fact remains that if a Muslim didn't believe wearing hijab was mandated by God, they wouldn't endorse it, at least not as strongly as they would from a religious standpoint. The arguments about "temptation" and "avoiding lust" are just ad hocs to support a position that is already held and defended because it is perceived to be a religious requirement regardless of whether or not it actually has any benefits aside from perceived religious piety.

Again the meaning of Hijab doesn't mean covering the hair and showing other body parts.

I am not saying that women should look ugly.

Do you know the different reactions of the same person when he sees a woman passing by with one wearing Hijab and one not wearing Hijab?

When a hijab woman passes, they say MashAllah, how beautiful she is!

When a non hijab woman passes, they say ohh that body I just want to ....... you know the rest.

This is the attitude of men, now don't try to tell me that only muslim men are like that !!

Maybe you can tell me that western guys dont discuss this in public... But ohh their imagination would always be busy.

No, if a woman is sexy, she is sexy regardless of whether she's covering her hair or not, as the pictures I posted demonstrate. All those women are wearing hijab, but they are still quite attractive.

The only way you're going to really "protect" women from sexuality is by making them wear shapeless burqa sacks where their faces are covered, too, and you can't make out any of their features. I've seen women wearing those around here, too.

Nuns are not oppressed by wearing the habit of their order since they make the choice to join an order that wears a habit. They can also leave the order, while still remaining Catholic. Monks also wear the habits of their orders. There are orders who do not wear habits anymore.

Nuns and monks are the monastic ascetics of a religion and so they are expected to be celibate and devote their entire lives to God. Trying to compare them to Muslim women is a false equivalence. You would only have a point if lay Catholic women were required to cover their hair and they aren't. They can choose to do so, particularly at Mass, but they aren't mandated to do so. Most don't.

I completely disagree. There is a huge difference

That is one kind of hijab

Had muslims did what nuns do it would have been called oppression because Islam=oppression.

This is how people understand it.

You're missing the point. Nuns do not represent the female Catholic laity. Monasticism is a separate vocation and their lifestyles are much different from the lifestyle of the laity. The habit represents their separateness from the world and their religious consecration. It's a sort of uniform, an outward sign of their vocation as religious sisters. Nuns are also considered to be wedded to Christ and many of them wear wedding bands to symbolize that. The reasons for them to wear it aren't because of sexuality, as you are saying the reason for Muslim women covering up is. Islam does not believe in asceticism so you should not be trying to draw parallels where they don't belong. Lay Catholic women are not required to cover themselves and most don't.

Question: Why do nuns wear a "habit"?
Answer: A "habit" tells who the nuns are. Nuns are women of prayer who have dedicated themselves to a life of prayer, penance and sacrifice. They do not keep to themselves the fruit of their contemplation, but share it with others. The nuns accept with gratitude people who come to them for prayers for through them they are fulfilling their mission of bringing to God the needs of the suffering world. So a "religious habit" is a visible manifestation for people to know and see that nuns are giving and sharing their lives for others for the salvation of the world and for God's glory.
