The Walking Dead

Oh, Lord....please spare us the derision of snobs who lecture us that only the original & pure form is legit.

(You know, Angie, I couldn't resist. It's not my fault. I have a problem.)

Yeah, I usually feel bad for those people. They only get one great thing to enjoy, but since I don't compare them to each other, I get two great things to enjoy.

I did like the first season - the deviations were tolerable. But it doesn't make sense to base the series on a successful comic and then go a whole other way. If they thought the idea was good, why didn't they remain at least partially faithful to it?

Now we just have some very basic shadows of characters that connect the two very different story lines -

I think that it's significant that Rick only has one arm in the comic

Lori dies with the baby in an assault on the prison rather than in childbirth

Andrea is a much more powerful character in the book - a sniper, not someone with conflicted loyalties, sleeping with Mr. Gov

Then you have the whole slew of characters who either aren't there or are added

Just stop comparing them. As long as you compare one to the other, ultimately, one of the two are going to fall short of expectations.

Now, I'm no expert, but I've seen a lot zombie movies in my time, and I mean a lot. I even watch the zombie movies from the 30s and 40s where the zombies are the voodoo form instead of walking corpses as we know them. I have seen a lot of good zombie movies and a lot of bad zombie movies, and the Walking Dead TV show is easily in the top 10, maybe even top 5 best zombie movie/TV shows.

If you are a zombie connoisseur and dislike the Walking Dead solely because of the comparison to the comics, you are doing yourself a huge disservice.

Yeah, Shane dies much earlier than in the TV show. I also was a big fan of Tyreese and a fan of Andrea from the comic. I still need to get caught up, though, yet I know what happens to Glen and Tyreese.... :(.....and doesn't Andrea and Rick hook up in the comic?

But from the TV show, I love love love Daryl. I understand how different the show is from the comic, but MAN is Daryl a favorite of mine. I'm one of those people who says "If Daryl dies, we riot." :D

Anyway, I need to get caught up in the comics to compare and contrast better. But for now, at the prison....

I'm quite excited to see what happens in season 4. So far, I'm still hooked.

Is it me or is Carl getting more annoying?

Was Carl even in tonight's show? I don't remember him. But yeah, he is more annoying. Also that guy Darrel almost fought with over the liquor, I don't know what his deal is but I almost wanted Darrel to push him off the roof to the walkers. So far he has proven to, not only be completely useless, but a liability as well.

Haven't seen it yet, which means I can still hope Carl got bit.

So Carl didn't get bit?

Nope, he wasn't. And I'm perfectly fine with it. :D

They should have of written it so that he had left with Carol.

Speaking of.....

What did you think of Rick giving her the boot?

He explained it, but tbh if I had been there listening to it I would have been shaking my head at him.

My guess, Rick's explanations aside, is that deep down he still considers himself the leader and the idea of anyone making such a radical decision without his OK makes him nervous.

Probably wasn't a good idea considering he isn't in charge of anything anymore. He should have left it up to the group to decide, although he may have been trying to save her from Tyrese who I'm guessing would have killed her regardless of what the group decided. Either way, I don't think it was his decision alone to make.

Really? He's sort of fought off the leadership role from the get go. He fell into the job and title because it came naturally to him to protect and serve but he was perfectly fine submitting to someone else's decision in the farm. The idea of killing that kid was a group decision and he seemed content with going with whatever the group decided.

However, I do think you are right about Rick not being involved but I don't think it's an alpha male egotistical type of reason. He just wants to know what is coming so he can react accordingly and protect those around him.

Rick continues to annoy me. Carol had grown from a weakling into a cold & clear headed gal who's willing to do what needs to be done. She's the type any group needs to survive the zombie apocolips....apocalypse....apo....uh....menace. Rick will tolerate violence so long as it's impromptu, ill considered, & fueled with rage. Perhaps he believes that one has humanity only if one kills while out of control, eh? Perhaps Rick's being a loose cannon is useful to keep up the drama. By kicking her out of the group, I see the writers doing a helluva job keeping things interesting.

It had to deviate from the comic a little to be a plausible character drama for live action TV. If it were to stay thoroughly faithful to the comic it would have to be an animated show, otherwise it would be completely cheesy as live action (as most adaptations from comic book/cartoon/video game to live action tend to be).

Rick had a point about the "mercy killings", though. The victims didn't consent, and they could've potentially recovered, so it was unnecessary and murder. Also, she carried out these actions without the leadership's blessing or knowledge. Being unpredictable, dishonest and extreme (and thus untrustworthy), it makes sense that Rick would be concerned about her presence within within the group.
