To defeat creationist, must you defeat their religion????

Why would assume that?

because the USA is predominantly christian.

Do christians base creation because of what the bible says? I always thought they did.

Additionally, the vast majority of mainstream christian faiths accept evolution.

I understand this.

Now when im talking with people at work or other groups I find the devote religious followers are almost always anti evolution --- pro creation.

ps... the 60% figure is a result of tricky wording of the question.

I sure hope so

I know that geographic location has everything to do with this

I really dont care what someone believes Rick, I have no problem with religion exept when it crosses the line of science and try's to push religion in schools or when it stops medical advancement.

Do you have any examples of religion stopping medical advancement?
What do you perceive as "crossing the line of science"? Any examples?
I don't believe we are allowed to "push religion" in schools are we?

We can pray in school in our spare time, (I believe many more prayers are given up on test day). :D

We can have a Bible club during after school hours.

So what? Creationism is one issue that unites several groups. AIG has worked closely with Harun Yahya for example.

Do christians base creation because of what the bible says? I always thought they did.
No, some base it on a particular interpretation of the Bible. Others on a lack of information on evolution. Others on what their parents/other authority figures tell them to believe.

That's nice, but anecdotes are not scientific evidence.

As does factors such as poverty and wording.

Just by changing the wording of the evolution question you can change the results of the poll by as much or more than 10-20%.

ill-informed of what??
World religions at large.

No, thats not how I think.
I wasn't implying that is how you think--but that is the way you are coming across

Not true. Dopp is Agnostic. I do know he took a position against my view without understanding where I come from. I asked a question and he misunderstood my opinion.
Then why did you challenge him to "prove his God exists" then bet you know more Biblical history than he does, as if you thought he was a theist?

excellent, you finally answered my question. I started this thread out asking a question. This was a yes or no type question. Now I know where you stand. Thats fine im not %100 on my view THATS WHY I POSED THE QUESTION lol :)
Lol, I supported you in the beginning. :D

I have spent over 35 years as a theist and spent 8 years in a private church school that gave me a good education despite the mean nuns with a snappy ruler :)
I know you spent time with nuns and rulers and so on as you have mentioned many times on here before. My point was, though may I ask how many religions were you in those 35 years? Were you just Christian, probably Catholic and maybe even Protestant later on? Were you ever anything more, well, beyond the mundane trappings of the Abrahamic?

What other scriptures have you read besides say, the Bible, Quran, and Book of Mormon?

I know both sides of the coin to learn the thin line in the middle [the truth]
I agree. :)

ps... the 60% figure is a result of tricky wording of the question. It is well known that how you word a question in such a survey has a major impact of the results you get.

Hey PW, may I ask how the question was worded, if you know of it? I've not seen the questions that were surveyed, or even how many people took part in the survey, so I'm curious. :)

biblical history has nothing to do with a theist, more then not, they know less.

as far god exist, one can always check or ask

Were you ever anything more

studied buddhism for a year or two

What other scriptures have you read besides say, the Bible, Quran, and Book of Mormon?

I have had enough scripture with the bible lol I understand the basics of mormon culture and script. I feel if I read the koran and the book of mormon I would want my time back

LOL! Definite possibility. :D

But I meant besides the Bible, Quran and BoM, what scriptures have you read?

Tao Te Ching? Guru Granth Sahib? Vedas? Dhammapada? Lotus Sutra? Heart Sutra? Mahaparinirvana Sutra? The Upanishads? Bhagavad Gita? Gathas? Any of these, others?

"Defeating" is over-rated. If a discussion is a battle, each side will become even more entrenched.
Friendly discussion of what is held in common, & exploring differences looks more productive.

So many of us realize, interpret and construct our own MYthologies,
for OUR OWN reasons. (none of which you seem to have any awareness of).

My OWN life, is a kind of mythology/fairy tale/epic poem written at my own hand.

I personally am more concerned about modern day mythologies like
"if you go to college you will have a great job and future ahead of you".
Your degree will give you what you need to "succeed in life".
As if this is some kind of "promise of salvation".

Which I have WAY more than enough evidence to fully counter.

Yet it is something that most people believe.
"You must go to college to succeed" AND
"College will give you what you need to be successful".
Two modern day myths that people live (and go into massive debt) by,
and PUSH on their children, as if there are no other possibilities or options for them.

UV, did you see my earlier post?

Do you have any examples of religion stopping medical advancement?

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You're not seriously asking this question, are you?

Thanks. That's why I asked it. Why didn't you answer it?

I'm going to ask it again. Along with another question you are avoiding.

What is my position? Which "god" is mine?

No. Though going by this discussion, I think you probably have such severe prejudices that you cannot engage in a respectful or productive discussion about the nature of religious belief.

Again, since you started right off the bat ready to "debate" me, which side do you believe I am taking?

C'mon, you were quick to size me up. What are you conclusions? Show some guts and tell me what you concluded about me when you wrote your first two responses to me in this thread. What viewpoints do I hold? Which "god" is mine?

I dare you.

You assume much.

I do not know those myths

Show me that some religious people are not brainwashed and I will gladly give up any and all fight.

The problem I have is, these poor parents pass this behaviour down to their children who go to school with my child and it spreads like disease. This is why USA is next to the last in western countries when it comes to false beliefs in the creation myth.

We still have teachers who believe creation is real as well as a healthy amount of students.

this is not a small isolated issue, its widespread.

religion fights science, thats why I ask my question

If you don't know what they say how do know they are just myths?

peronal opinion

show me a religion based on facts with no magical men, not based on imagination. As A atheist you know I have a lack of belief.

Now for the purpose of this thread, im against a creation story that goes against science, reality and reason.
