No. I haven't believed in ages that the serpent was symbolic for Satan. It is all about the loss of innocence of humankind: There had to be a time when humankind first had sentience.
We all, each of us, have that point: When we are tiny children we know nothing about death and disobedience- but we learn it (that is for the average people- some people are handicapped in some way with autism, etc). We all learn it. I think that could be what the story represents, but I really don't know for sure.
