One of the things noted in the article is that the difference was not due to young men voting for Trump (which they expected), but it didn't seem to chime with as many young women as anticipated.

Yeah, I caught that. One of the factors I was considering was how Trump's anti-lgbtq+ messaging was going to influence people based on the fact that the population is more open and more and more people know someone from that community, making these issues more visible.
It does stand to reason that women are also concerned about men's issues given that they have men they care about. What doesn't quite vibe with me here is how the side of masculinity that leads to toxic male behavior is the one that won out.
