Utah counts down to firing squad execution

I have more important things to do than worry about how other countries treat their citizens.

I'm done arguing with people who cannot respect other peoples opinions and jump on them and try to belittle them for their opinions.

I am now going to enjoy a board game with my fiance.

Well, at least we can be confident that you won't try to change things elsewhere to fit your sick view of justice.

Excuse me why are my views so sick?

I could say the same thing about your views on bugs and child molesters and rapists......

Ok, if you want to say that my belief that we shouldn't kill child molesters and rapists is sick, feel free. It'd be rather silly, but nobody is stopping you.

Why would I want to change things elsewhere?
It's none of my business what's going on in other countries and I don't care.
They need to change things for themselves.
It's not up to us.

Do you want your taxes to continue to pay for rapists, murderers, and child molesters?
I'd rather that nobody raped, murdered or molested in the first place, but given that these people exist, I'd rather not have them killed, and I'd rather not have them out free to earn their own living. Paying to keep them fed and housed is the winning option by elimination.

If you can prove without a doubt that someone committed murder, then by all means execute them. if someone murdered anyone in my family and it was proven that they did it I would not want them to live.
I have no doubt that you wouldn't. However, you may have noticed that it's judges and juries (within the limits put in place by legislators) who decide criminal sentences, not victims of crime or their families.

Allowing rage and vengeance to run rampant is generally not compatible with actual justice... even if it's based on feelings that are entirely understandable.

There are crimes that forfeit your right to continue living... in my opinion...

Sadistic murder, rape/murder, repeat child molestation...

Ask yourselves

If you were to spend the remainder of your life in prison or be shot, which would you rather?

Honestly, I'd rather be shot than live in a cell, have the exact same, structured routine day in, day out, be unable to walk outside the wall that close me in for the next however many years I'll still be alive.

That, I think, is a much more painful punishment than death.

Interestingly, in NZ, it costs $92,000 per year to imprison one person. That's what needs to be focused on - bringing that cost down. Some of these people have devastated the lives of others. I don't know if they should cost the government almost 3 times the average yearly income for the average citizen. I'm not entirely convinced they need underfloor heating when my house doesn't have state-funded under floor heating. I'm also not convinced they need a TV when I don't have one, and can live fine without it. IMO books are a much cheaper option, and they're still reusable after 20 years. I'm also not convinced that every dinner meal needs a dessert.

I just think people shouldn't kill other people, even if they really do deserve it. It just cheapens the value of human life.

edit: I'd take the life in prison myself. Not a big fan of non-existence. Oblivion is scary enough that even a crappy life in prison is preferable.

I would say that allowing murderers to live cheapens the value of human life.

If human life is so valuable, then the one who steals a life should be made to forfeit his own.

The fact that plea bargains frequently include a guilty plea in exchange for taking death off the table says to me that people would much rather live... even in prison... than die.

Everybody has a survival instinct. When bad people do bad things, they do so in a way to avoid dying or getting caught.... and if they must get caught, avoiding death is still a factor.

More killing won't bring back anybody.

It's not about bringing anybody back.

Why should we, as a society, accept the idea that murderers may murder without consequences proportional to their crime?

Why should we be ok with someone who rapes, disfigures, murders, and mutilates a person getting the same punishment as a guy who steals some golf clubs?

(I'm referring to a guy whose third strike was felony theft... the item: some very expensive golf clubs.)
